Lotheni – overlooked, under-appreciated, and quietly incredible.

Tucked away in the southern Drakensberg, Lotheni Nature Reserve is one of those places that doesn’t shout for attention – and that’s exactly where its magic lies. While the busier Berg resorts draw the crowds, Lotheni offers wide open spaces, rolling grasslands, dramatic sandstone cliffs, and a deep sense of calm that’s getting harder to find.

It’s a place where eland still roam, trout swim in clear rivers, and the mountains feel personal.

There are walks for everyone:

-Easy riverside strolls along the Lotheni River (±5 km)

-A rewarding hike to the Bushman Paintings (±7–8 km return)

-Longer day hikes toward the foothills of the high Berg for those wanting a proper Drakensberg adventure

Only about 85 km from Hilton, KZN (roughly a 2-hour drive), Lotheni feels far removed from the noise without being far away at all.

With chalets and campsites available, there’s plenty of space to slow down, breathe deep, and settle into mountain life.

If you’re craving quieter trails, colder mornings, crackling fires, and stars that actually stop you in your tracks – Lotheni deserves a spot on your list.
