I came to the shelter to save lives.
What I understand now is that this job is so much bigger than that.
When I started, I thought I could save every dog and every cat. But some stories don't have happy endings, no matter how hard I try.
I hear my phone ping while I'm trying to switch off at night, and I already know what waits on the other side of the screen. A stabbed dog. A poisoned dog. A mauled cat. A child that's been bitten. A puppy fighting parvo.
I've opened a one-metre by one-metre hut and found a dog who had chewed off his own tail after being locked inside while his owner went to sea. You don't forget things like that.
You don't forget the dog whose aggression became so dangerous that even his owners were too frightened to enter their own property. I couldn't save that one.
You don't forget the parvo puppy who took her last breath in my arms because she was never vaccinated. Or the poisoned cat I held while rushing her to the vet, knowing it was too late to save him.
I have looked into the eyes of countless owners. I have pleaded. I have educated. I have asked them to sterilise their animals. I have begged people not to make choices that would end in suffering. Sometimes they listened. Sometimes they didn't.
And then I fetched the dogs that were trying to kill each other. The dogs that had become a danger to every animal they saw. I couldn't save those either.
I've stood beside owners as they wept for beloved companions who had to be put to sleep. I've seen what grief looks like when it's raw and immediate. I've seen the devastation when a neighbour stabs a dog for barking. I've seen how much hurt exists on both sides of the lead.
This work doesn't start at 8 and end at 5. Animal cruelty doesn't keep office hours. Neglect doesn't take weekends off.
Some days I save lives.
Some days I ease suffering.
Some days all I can do is bear witness, make the hard decisions, and keep going.
Tomorrow I'll get up and do it all again. And the day after that because they will still be out there.
