Huddy's the name goes back to the early 60's when school boys at Treverton school battled to get their mouths around Mr Hudson-Reed, my late father, who was the founder headmaster of the school. The name stuck and has past down the line to his children, either in the classroom or in business. In the early 80's my brother D

onald started trading in bric-a-brac, collectables, furniture, cars .... actually anything. As a student boarding with him, I was dragged off to Cannon and Finlay on a Saturday morning, initially with much protest, before the bug caught me. Not just the buying and selling bug but I looked forward to the entertainment the auctioneer Peter Maskell offered. With the little I earned selling burgers at a dodgy all night take away, I started buying books. R10 could buy numerous tea boxes of books on a Saturday. We started doing the flea markets and were part of a group of the earliest marketeers in Pietermaritzburg. My brother started Huddy's, the 'junk shop', which soon become a land mark in PMB. Anything from a pot lid to an angle grinder or a Royal Doulton figurine were on sale. You could hardly walk through the stock in the two old houses he had bought on Winston Road. During this time I had a shop in Mossel Bay and Paarl, and discovered collectable books and more specifically Africana. My late dad once retired started dealing in books and on my return to Pietermaritzburg I took over his book business. When Donald passed away I took over the use of the name Huddy's, but specialised in books. I traded informally for a few years, before setting up shop at Piggly Wiggly. We sell quality second hand and collectable books, of all genre, but have a special interest in Africana and Esotoric literature. Our shop will fascinate anyone with a love for books, but especailly anyone with an interest in South African literature. Visit us.

After almost 15 years at Piggly Wiggly on the Midlands Meander, Huddy’s Books and Collectibles has sold its shop and is stepping into a new chapter.

Since opening in 2011, the shop has built a loyal following for its carefully chosen second-hand and collectible books, particularly Africana, military history, art and specialised non-fiction, along with interesting and quirky furniture and selected collectibles. For many local readers and collectors, it has been a place to return to again and again in search of something unexpected.

While the shopfront has closed, Huddy’s continues, but in a different form.

Clare now runs the successful Huddy’s Online Auction, where curated book collections are presented in thoughtfully assembled lots. The Auctions include rare and out-of-print titles, as well as themed groupings that reflect years of experience in sourcing quality material. The Auctions are a fun way to source interesting books.

Colin, meanwhile, remains very much involved in the world of books. He can be found at the Karkloof Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings, selling and buying good-quality books and continuing the hands-on work of discovering interesting collections.

The heart of Huddy’s has always been a deep appreciation for good books and the stories they carry, and that remains unchanged. Customers who supported the shop over the years are warmly invited to stay connected through the Online Auctions, where we might even sell the odd interesting collectible. Upcoming sales and registration details are available at huddysbooks.co.za.

A door has closed at Piggly Wiggly, but the next chapter is already underway.
