Do you know the difference between a 38 SPL & 38 S&W?

The main difference is that the .38 Special is a longer, more powerful cartridge with a slightly smaller diameter (0.357"), while the .38 S&W (Smith & Wesson) is shorter, older, less powerful, and has a slightly larger diameter (around 0.361"), making them non-interchangeable, as .38 S&W ammo often won't fit or seal properly in .38 Special chambers, risking dangerous pressure issues. The .38 Special evolved from the .38 S&W for better performance in swing-out cylinder revolvers.

Key Differences
• Case Length: .38 Special is significantly longer (1.155") than .38 S&W (0.775").
• Bullet Diameter: .38 S&W has a slightly larger diameter (approx. 0.361") compared to .38 Special (approx. 0.357").
• Performance: .38 Special has higher pressure, more powder capacity, and delivers better velocity and energy.
• Interchangeability: Due to length and diameter, they generally don't fit in each other's guns; .38 S&W ammo is too large for most .38 Special cylinders, and .38 Special is too long for .38 S&W cylinders.
• Usage: .38 S&W is mostly for older, break-action revolvers, while .38 Special is a very common, modern round.

Do I need to join a shooting club if I want to licence my firearm under section 15?

No, you do not legally need to join a shooting club or association to license a firearm under Section 15 of the South African Fi****ms Control Act, which is for occasional hunting and sport shooting. Membership of an accredited
association is a requirement for a Section 16 license (dedicated status), which allows for more than four fi****ms and semi-automatic rifles/shotguns.

Key differences for Section 15
• Membership: Not compulsory. You are considered an "occasional" participant.
• Proof of Activity: You must still provide proof of occasional participation as part of your motivation. This can include items such as:
o Photos of you at the range or hunting.
o Range slips or shooting range register entries.
o Letters or declarations from farm owners where you intend to hunt.
o References from hunting or shooting colleagues.
o Invitations to shooting events or hunts.
• Firearm Limit: You are generally limited to possessing a maximum of four fi****ms under this section (and a total of four across both Section 13 and 15).
• Ammunition Limit: You may not possess more than 200 rounds of ammunition per licensed firearm.
• License Validity: A Section 15 license is valid for 10 years.
