Three disposable coveralls can look almost identical on the shelf and offer completely different protection.
The difference is on the data sheet, not the garment.
A general-purpose coverall is built for particulates and general contamination control: cleaning, maintenance, non-hazardous work. It is classed as minimal risk. It will keep dust off a worker and it will not do more than that.
A Type 5/6 coverall is a different product. Type 5 covers airborne solid particulates. Type 6 covers limited liquid splash. It carries tested performance data, including liquid pe*******on and repellency classes against specific chemicals, plus tear, tensile, abrasion, puncture and seam strength ratings.
If someone is working near chemical splash in a minimal-risk coverall, the requisition says they are protected. The garment does not.
Worth checking before your next order:
- Does the specification match the actual exposure, or was the coverall chosen on appearance and price?
- Has anyone asked for the data sheet? A coverall with no stated test classes has not been tested.
- Is the hazard heat? If so, this is the wrong category entirely. Polyethylene laminate coveralls begin to melt at around 120Β°C and must be kept away from flame, sparks and hot surfaces.
