My Story
My Background: My name is Christopher Pienaar and I am 32 years old. I’ve spent most of my life in Alexandra Township, perceived to be one of the most dangerous townships around Johannesburg but I beg to differ, it’s a place of opportunity. I attended Westbury High School, where I completed my matric and achieved university exemption. Unfortunately, due to financial circumstances I was unable to attend university and worked in jobs ranging from baggage handling to data capturing, before deciding to become self-employed in 2007, selling b**r from my house in Alex. Last year I saw the Awethu team at the Alex community centre, and decided to take their test...
The Selection Process: Round one I persevered over 1,700 applicants, Round 2 another 30 talented applicants were sent to the sidelines, and in Round 3 I went head-to-head with eight more entrepreneurs. I had to prove that I have the will power, ability and drive to run a successful business under the Awethu banner. Being selected as an Awethu Entrepreneur: The opportunity that the Awethu Project has presented me changed my life in a positive way. I am the CEO of my own company, I am in control of changing my life, and above that I am changing the way Alexandra Township is perceived by other businesspeople. I am no longer a “Sun Driver” (Sitting in the sun from sunrise to sunset), now that I am an Awethu Project Entrepreneur; I am a “World Class Entrepreneur in Training”. My Business
Current operations: My business is called “Straight to Your Door”, an innovative service based in Alex that started by delivering bread and other products straight to customers' doorsteps. The service allows our customers to have freshly baked, quality bread in their homes on a daily basis without the hassle of daily shopping, at a price comparable to local spaza shops. I started the business with R20 by buying four loaves of bread, and today I am making over R10 000 per month in profit. STYD is now involved with market research, and has become a bottom of the pyramid specialist, helping big corporates to access the lucrative Alex market. He is currently working on a major project for Kraft Foods, one of the world’s largest food companies.
