I want to address an incident that took place in Norwood on 01 September 0002.
While driving home, I was almost involved in a collision with another vehicle. The other driver thereafter followed me home. When I stopped, I lowered my window to understand what the issue was.
I was then subjected to racial and religious remarks. The “K-word” was used against me, I was racially insulted, and I was threatened with the words:
“I will kill you and your Muslim family.”
After the vehicle drove away, I took out my phone and began recording. I then approached the driver again to ask him about what he had just said to me. That is where the video picks up and captures the exchange that followed, including me being called an “Indian cunt”.
The video therefore shows what happened after the initial remarks and threat had already been made.
What concerns me most is the hatred and racism behind what was said. The use of racial language, together with remarks directed at my race and religion, cannot simply be dismissed as anger in the heat of the moment.
Racism and Islamophobia remain very real issues in our society. There is already enough division and hatred, and people should not be targeted or threatened because of their race, ethnicity or religion.
My attorneys are already involved. We will be laying criminal charges, reporting the matter to the relevant authorities and lodging a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission.
My intention in speaking publicly is not to fuel anger, but to make it clear that racism, Islamophobia and threats of violence should never be normalised.
