The appropriate fly fishing leader setup can be the difference between catching fish and not catching fish.

Here, Tom Lewin (Tom Lewin) guides us through how he sets up his leader for stream fishing, using a tapered 8ft 5x (trouthuntertippet) leader and 3-4ft of 6x tippet, joined by a loop-to-loop connection.

A great reel is one you stop thinking about. It sits on the rod, does its job in the background and lets you focus entirely on the water in front of you.

The Sage Shift is built on exactly that principle – a fully machined, large arbor fly reel that brings genuine performance across the full spectrum of fly fishing applications, from small stream trout to saltwater flats, without the price tag of a top-tier reel.

Strike Indicator Synthetic Yarn is engineered from premium hydrophobic synthetic fibres that actively repel water and stay buoyant through long drifts.

Unlike wool, the wiry, crinkled texture traps air bubbles within the fibres, delivering exceptional floatation without floatant — though a light application will extend performance even further.

Each spool contains 24 feet of yarn divided into three 8-foot strands, sized to work directly with the Strike Indicator tubing system.

The indicators are fully adjustable, 100% knotless, quick to make and easy to remove and reuse. Available in four colours to match conditions — choose the right one and your indicator works with you, not against you.

Colour Guide
* White — stealthy; mimics air bubbles on the water surface; includes a free “Leave No Trace” vial with Velcro yarn brush cap
* Orange — hi-vis; ideal when sighting is a challenge
* Green — best against dark backgrounds or in low light conditions
* Black — anti-glare; performs best when the water surface turns silver or grey

Hydrolysis in wading boots is an ageing process which occurs over a number of years but which can be accelerated by certain factors. Damp conditions are specific catalysts for hydrolysis as they increase the amount of contact the polyurethane has with water molecules. When moisture reacts with the polyurethane polymer chains, it causes them to break down over time. Hydrolysis is therefore more likely to occur in boots which are worn in wet conditions without being cleaned afterwards.

With proper care and regular use, quality wading boots should provide 3-5+ years of reliable service. Some boots may last even longer depending on usage frequency and care.

Keep your wading boots in top condition:
✅ Use your boots regularly - don’t let them sit idle for months

✅ Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space away from heat sources

✅ Clean thoroughly after every fishing trip

✅ Test boots before major trips if they’ve been stored long-term

✅ Inspect soles and seams periodically for early signs of deterioration
