Your fly might be way out of the zone — even when your line is at the perfect depth.

“I fished long leaders for years before realising the problem: the line gets to depth, but a slow-sinking fly ends up way above it. Shortening the leader lets the line pull the fly down — and keep it there through the whole retrieve.”

His go-to stillwater rig setups (leader + tippet length):
🔹 Floating line → 9ft 3X + 4ft 3X tippet
🔹 Hover line → 8ft total
🔹 Intermediate → 5ft total
🔹 Fast sinking → 4ft total (short heavy section + fluoro tippet)
