What makes a good training reward? 🐶💚

The answer is simple: something your dog genuinely enjoys!

For food rewards, choose treats that are:

✓ Small enough to give frequently
✓ Soft and quick to eat
✓ Tasty enough to keep your dog interested

Quick rewards help training flow without long chewing breaks—but food isn’t the only option. Some dogs will happily work for a favourite toy, a quick game or enthusiastic praise.

Pay attention to what keeps your dog engaged, and remember that the value of a reward can change depending on the situation. An everyday treat may work perfectly at home, while a more distracting environment might require something extra special.

🐾 DOG TRAINER vs DOG BEHAVIOURIST — what’s the difference?

They both help dogs, but they don’t necessarily do the same job.

A dog trainer generally focuses on teaching skills and helping dogs learn what to do — things like loose-lead walking, recall, manners, puppy foundations and impulse control.

A qualified behaviourist looks deeper into why a behaviour is happening, particularly when there may be fear, anxiety, reactivity, aggression, resource guarding or other complex behavioural concerns.

And sometimes? Your dog may need both. 💚

Behaviour can also be influenced by pain or underlying medical conditions, which is why your vet may need to be part of the conversation too.

Most importantly, qualifications matter. “Behaviourist” isn’t a term to choose on experience alone — ask about education, professional qualifications and methods. Look for reputable, appropriately qualified professionals, such as those with recognised COAPE education/credentials where relevant.

There’s no shame in asking for help. The goal is the same: a happier dog who feels safe, understood and supported. 🐶💚

Today we celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela by remembering that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.

Our Mandela Day was a little early this year. Last weekend we had the privilege of partnering with Gomora Dog Association in Alexandra Township, where we shared basic dog handling and training knowledge, donated food, treats, beds and other essential supplies, and spent the day with people who care deeply about the wellbeing of their community's dogs.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed and helped make the day possible. Together, we can make a real difference—one animal, one family and one community at a time.
