This little toyshop of mine…
The past year with Olipop Toyshop has been a rollercoaster. They say the first two years make or break a business — and wow, have I felt that. From copyright and trademark hurdles to surprise legal bills, and now changes to US import rules… it’s been a lot. From the end of August, all US parcels will be taxed, a big shift for a small shop like mine.
The USA has been Olipop Toyshop’s biggest supporter, and I’m so deeply grateful. Your love has helped me give back to the DHH community in South Africa in ways I never imagined. Olipop Toyshop was born from Oli’s hearing journey. Five years in, and I’m still learning every day. This shop was created for families like mine. Yes, it’s a business, but it’s always been about helping parents find something to make things just a little easier during what can be an overwhelming time.
This journey has brought incredible connections — podcasting with Karen McIver Lux, joining Dr Uma Soman’s Listening Together, and collaborating with inspiring moms like .language and .hearo. I’ve met amazing SLPs, Teachers of the Deaf, audiologists, and, most importantly, other families, especially moms, walking similar paths. Each one has reminded me that I’m not alone, and that community truly is everything.
Olipop Toyshop is evolving. I feel called to offer more parent-to-parent support, and while I don’t know exactly what that looks like or what the future holds, I’ll keep showing up with purpose, hope, and a whole lot of heart.
