Spawning part 3. Post Spawn
Once the exhausting chaos of the spawn is over, carp will move back to deeper, quieter areas where they can rest and recover from injuries and hold up untill their stress levels are normalized. The physical spawning stage can last up to 2 weeks thereafter carp will spend 3 to 7 days being very inactive. Once the recovery period is over, their appetites return with a vengeance and they start a post spawn feeding frenzy. Use highly digestable ground feed that they can eat over long periods without getting full like cracked buck wheat and h**p seed. As with the pre spawn, incorporate protein rich foods like fishmeal, chicken mash or kalf meel in your groundfeed to create a rich savory feeding spot. These flavors signal heavy nutrition for the carp. During this stage carp are actively seeking out food that is high in essential amino acids, so don't forget to incorporate Mixit Bait Supplies amino compound in your bom. As far as dips are concerned, you want to use flavours contrasting your ground feed. Anything with a molasses base and a sweet fruity or a combination of garlic fruit or fishy fruit blends along with bunspice and a maize flavored dip will be quite effective. For spod mixes, use crushed maize (not whole maize) and small particles like h**pseed and buckwheat. Use high vis floats that stand out on your feeding spot. Sweet flavoured floats and hook baits will get picked up a lot quicker then hookbaits with the same flavour of your groundfeed. To summarize: use savory groundfeed, infused with h**p and buckwheat and use contrasting dips with sweet high vis floaties. Don't forget to add Mixit Bait Supplies amino acid compound to your groundfeed for a killer combination.
All products like base, prepared molasses, buckwheat, h**pseed, and flavours are available as DIY kits from MiXiT Bait Supplies.

Spawning part 2.
During the peak of the spawn, individual carp do not feed at all. Their reproductive instinct takes over the urge to eat and they are focused on the high energy chaos of chasing and thrashing through w**d beds and vegetated areas releasing eggs and milt. The fish's stress levels and hormones are through the roof and they will pass up any easy meal during this phase. It is not impossible to catch carp during the spawn, but it will take a lot of know-how and patience. Use small sweet, highly visible baits that imitate eggs that got dislodge from the vegetation. Target areas about 10m outside the spawning zones. Good luck to you if you fish during the spawn.

Spawning: When to catch and what to use

When carp Spawn, their normal bodily functions, behavior and daily routine undergoes a significant change. There are 3 stages to Spawning and in this post we will explain what happens in each stage individually.
THE PRE SPAWN
During pre Spawn, when the water temperature starts increasing and we experience longer day light hours, carp tend to start feeding aggressively. They instinctively start "fattening" themselves up to build up fat and energy reserves for the physical spawn. In a female carp, eggs can account for up to 30% of her body weight. Developing and carrying this weight requires a lot of proteins, amino acids and nutrients. During this period carp are actively looking for high protein, high energy foods that help them to condition up quickly for the coming spawn. The best time to target carp is 2 to 3 weeks before spawning when the water reaches a steady 15-16 degrees. Once the water reaches 17 degrees, it triggers the start of the spawning ritual and their appetites shuts off completely as reproductive instincts take over.
As a rule of thumb, for water to reach pre spawn temperatures, there must be sustained day time high temps of between 18 to 21 degrees and night time low temps of between 7 to 9 degrees for at least 5 to 7 consecutive days. (Daytime high + nighttime low รท2).
Consider using highly digestable proteins like fishmeal or whey in your ground feed as this provides the nutrition needed for egg production. Quality amino acids like Mixit Bait Supplies amino compound mixed in your ground feed will also be incredibly effective. Due to it's natural amino and sugar content any molasses based dip will work extremely well during this period. Dip flavours that work well during the prespawn includes; Caramel, Garlic, TCP, Aniseed, Cinnamon, Almond and Fruity mixes.Target shallower areas just outside reedbeds and vegetated areas as this is were the fish will start holding up before the actual start of the spawn.
All flavours, base and prepared molasses are available from MiXiT Bait Supplies.
