Spawning: When to catch and what to use
When carp Spawn, their normal bodily functions, behavior and daily routine undergoes a significant change. There are 3 stages to Spawning and in this post we will explain what happens in each stage individually.
THE PRE SPAWN
During pre Spawn, when the water temperature starts increasing and we experience longer day light hours, carp tend to start feeding aggressively. They instinctively start "fattening" themselves up to build up fat and energy reserves for the physical spawn. In a female carp, eggs can account for up to 30% of her body weight. Developing and carrying this weight requires a lot of proteins, amino acids and nutrients. During this period carp are actively looking for high protein, high energy foods that help them to condition up quickly for the coming spawn. The best time to target carp is 2 to 3 weeks before spawning when the water reaches a steady 15-16 degrees. Once the water reaches 17 degrees, it triggers the start of the spawning ritual and their appetites shuts off completely as reproductive instincts take over.
As a rule of thumb, for water to reach pre spawn temperatures, there must be sustained day time high temps of between 18 to 21 degrees and night time low temps of between 7 to 9 degrees for at least 5 to 7 consecutive days. (Daytime high + nighttime low รท2).
Consider using highly digestable proteins like fishmeal or whey in your ground feed as this provides the nutrition needed for egg production. Quality amino acids like Mixit Bait Supplies amino compound mixed in your ground feed will also be incredibly effective. Due to it's natural amino and sugar content any molasses based dip will work extremely well during this period. Dip flavours that work well during the prespawn includes; Caramel, Garlic, TCP, Aniseed, Cinnamon, Almond and Fruity mixes.Target shallower areas just outside reedbeds and vegetated areas as this is were the fish will start holding up before the actual start of the spawn.
All flavours, base and prepared molasses are available from MiXiT Bait Supplies.
