It was just after 11pm when Sam's left front tyre let go on the N14.
Not a slow hiss. A bang — the kind that jolts you wide awake and throws the steering out of your hands. Sam wrestled the car onto the gravel, killed the hazards, and sat there in the dark. Heart hammering. Trucks thundering past close enough to shake the windows.
He didn't get out straight away.
Because Sam knew what we all know, even if we don't say it out loud. Standing on the side of a South African road at night, crouched next to a wheel — that's not just inconvenient. That's dangerous.
Last year, a truck driver pulled over on the N11 to change a puncture. He was alone. It was dusk. Four men approached him before he'd even loosened the first wheel nut. He was stabbed multiple times and left on the side of the road.
Over a puncture.
Sam sat in that car for a long time before he called for help. And while he waited, he made himself a promise: never again.
