What is oil sludge? How does it happen? Why should I care?

Engine oil sludge is a thick, sticky, tar-like residue 🤢 that forms inside an engine when the motor oil breaks down and loses its ability to properly lubricate and clean engine components.

Here’s how it happens:

1. Oil Breakdown from Heat

Engines run hot, and over time, especially in high-performance or stop-and-go driving, motor oil can oxidize and thicken. If oil isn’t changed regularly, heat causes it to break down into a gel-like substance.

2. Contaminants Build Up

Combustion byproducts like dirt, soot, unburned fuel, and moisture get into the oil. Normally, fresh oil with strong detergents disperses these contaminants, but as oil ages and weakens, these particles stick together and form sludge.

3. Poor Maintenance & Driving Conditions**

Infrequent oil changes** are the biggest cause.
Short trips (where the engine never fully warms up) prevent moisture and fuel residues from evaporating.
