Oh dear

Very often, loyal clients or good friends will send me images like these. Our beautiful bottles in a restroom... With blue, pink or whatever chemical industrial soap from the underworld.

While I love that the owners are reusing our bottles and that we at least contributed to less landfill, my heart breaks when I see these images. I feel so intensely sorry for the user: they are missing out on our gentle, natural and lovely scented soap!

So many hotels, guest houses, boutique hotels and lodges use our bulk refill products and the incredibly positive guest reviews about the amenities are what keeps our clients coming back for more.

Contact us if you would like to apply to become one of our hospitality clients!

Would you think this blue soap is from Fijn Botanicals or would you know it's an imposter?

The Story of Fijn: Part Five

The name "Petrus" is derived from the Ancient Greek word Πέτρος (Pétros) and its later Latin form Petrus, translating the Aramaic name Cephas given to the Apostle Simon Peter. It means "rock" or "stone," symbolizing strength, stability, and a firm foundation.

So it is with my Petrus.

This past week, I was reminded again of the absolute MIRACLE of our Healing Balm.

On Tuesday, a huge Jetour SUV drove over my left foot. I was wearing clogs, so the wooden sole was not really very forgiving. In the ensuing chaos (Lilja cried as mommy got really hurt), I only had Healing Balm and from many past experiences knew it would somewhat help. It did. The pain went and the next day I had NO SWELLING and only a few dark blue bruises. In two days they were almost gone. Only Healing Balm and the grace of God.

But here is the clincher: three days later, whilst setting up the Montagu Museum Herbs & Festival stall, I moved a table and the whole thing fell on my right foot! There were many people around and all rushed to my side to lift the table. In true boeremeisie style I laughed off the incredible pain and continued with the job at hand...
Until later that night when I took off my shoe and was quite aghast at what a table can do. Super swelling, hectic bruising. No Healing Balm...

Hmmm.

Check our stories for a visual comparison of the damage of an SUV with Healing Balm and a Table without Healing Balm...

The Story of Fijn Part 4

Interpreting and conserving cultural landscapes has been my specialist field for over 26 years. The knowledge I gained in understanding many different people's relationships to the environment, shaped the way I engage with landscapes forever. This knowledge helps me to create signature scents and the extensive landscape inspired perfume range for loam natural perfumery.

We were honoured to work with the Ju'hoansi San community at Nhoma Safari Camp recently, and the product line we co-created from their indigenous knowledge still inspires me to no end. I am looking forward to continuing the conversation with them at the !Khwa ttu heritage festival in September. Join us for a workshop on the 26th! Bookings directly with !Khwa ttu

The scent of Anōthen developed over considerable time. The base tincture is from a plant I used to drive past several times on my way to Lilja's little farm school a few years ago. One day, I noticed a cloud of white butterflies around a shrub with tiny white flowers. They smelled incredible and the bees confirmed it! I harvested several an armfull of branches with flowers and spent hours removing the tiny flowers and bottling them.

A year later the tincture of Gloveria integrifolia (Dubbelpendoring) was ready and I played with notes of Orris, Mimosa, and Almond and our own farm Lavender hydrosol.

"An almond orchard in spring, the white blossoms dancing in the bright morning breeze. Dew still glistens on the yellow mimosa puffs of the thorn trees, and its golden resin drips from the dark bark. Bees hum around the veld flowers, heralding the coming of summer’s abundance."

Anothen = “Light, born from above”. Being a shining light of Goodness.

Join me on a natural beeswax Balm Marathon!

13 years ago I made my first balm to treat my baby son's nappy rash. I started off with making a litre at a time, yielding 20 balms.

Now I make 60 litres at a time and I lost count of how many 15, 50 and 100ml balms I make at a time.

Still the same quality, care and highest grade ingredients I can find.

I source raw, unfiltered beeswax cakes from a sustainble beekeeper in our area. If the cake does not contain enough propolis, I add some from a stockpile I keep. This massive cake takes about 2 - 3 hours to slowly melt down.

My trusty Berta double wall heater and 5 litre stainless steel jugs help me get the job done. Plus a flower apron.

After melting I add oils and oils and oils.

And mine some rock hard organic, unrefined coconut oil (the low point in the process...)

Everything is added, avoiding the hot base on my skin

And then heated at a low temperature to avoid quality loss

Essential oils are added to the warmed and blended base and quickly poured into a variety of tins before it sets (I often hum or sing during this process)

The smooth surface of the solidified balms are SO rewarding. (Lilja finds it very hard to resist touching the complete balms at this point. I have to be vigilant)

Then comes the meditation of applying stickers. Thankfully we are a team of four that can divide and conquer. I am OCD about getting bubbles trapped below the surface of a sticker and have been known to skel if it happens repeatedly.

Only the best for our clients!
