Samuel Cron Cronwright Schreiner (1863–1936) was a South African farmer, politician, author, and public figure, best known for his marriage to and biographical works about the celebrated South African writer and feminist Olive Schreiner. Born on January 26, 1863, in the Bedford district of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. He attended St. Andrew's College in Grahamstown. He began farming in 1884, eventually managing a farm named Krantz Plaats near Cradock. After reading Olive Schreiner’s novel The Story of an African Farm and meeting her, the two married in February 1894. In an unconventional step for the era, he adopted her surname, taking the name Samuel Cron Cronwright-Schreiner in support of her feminist principles. The couple suffered the tragic loss of their only child, who died a day after birth in 1895. Over time, their marriage became strained due to frequent moves, health issues, and lengthy physical separations, including living on separate continents between 1913 and 1920.
He opposed British policy during the Second Anglo-Boer War, traveling to Britain in 1900 to campaign against military action in South Africa. Later served as a member of the Cape Legislative Assembly from 1902 to 1910.
Natural History & Zoology: Actively collected arachnids, insects, and reptiles, contributing specimens to the South African Museum and the Albany Museum. He authored agricultural and biological texts, including studies on Angora goats and The Migratory Springbucks of South Africa (1925).
Following Olive Schreiner's death in 1920, he arranged for her reburial on Buffels Kop. He wrote The Life of Olive Schreiner (1924) and compiled her letters and unpublished works. While these preserved her legacy, his editing choices later drew controversy from literary historians regarding accuracy and tone.
Second Marriage: In 1924, he dropped "Schreiner" from his surname and married Leonora Gann, with whom he had a daughter. He passed away in Cape Town on September 8, 1936.

A wonderful Victorian piece of history. Herbert Arthur Harper , the Welshpool yeoman who won a Montgomeryshire Yeomanry "best swordsman" s***f box —and carried it to the Cape. The silver s***f box was won by Herbert Arthur Harper (born Welshpool, 1858), a
young clerk who rode in Captain John Edmund Severne's troop of the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry Cavalry and took the regiment's prize for the best swordsman. Around 1881–82 he emigrated to the Cape of Good Hope, taking the box with him, which is why it is in South Africa today. His emigration dates the
award to the late 1870s (c.1879),

Captain John Edmund Severne (1826–1899) of Wallop Hall, Shropshire — a former 16th Lancers officer, a confirmed Montgomeryshire Yeomanry troop captain (named among the
officers in 1875), later MP and Shropshire alderman. His active captaincy in the 1870s , riding in Captain Severne's troop, Montgomeryshire Yeomanry

"Colonel Herbert Watkin Wynn" is Sir Herbert Lloyd Watkin Williams-Wynn, 7th Baronet (1860–1944) of Wynnstay. Every baronet in the family is styled "Sir Watkin". He commanded the regiment from 1889 and became
honorary Colonel in 1903.
