WILD, RARE, AND HAPPY BY NATURE 🌸🌿

Meet Serruria aemula and Serruria fucifolia! These rare Cape Town fynbos beauties are making a comeback, and they need our help to keep thriving.

Invasive alien plants are crowding out local species, taking away the sunlight and soil nutrients our indigenous flora need to flourish.

📍 DISCOVER THEM AT HAPPY BY NATURE:

Pop by HAPPY BY NATURE (at Kirstenbosch Gate 2) to explore rare indigenous fynbos, learn how to protect local biodiversity, and bring native plants into your own garden! 🌱✨

❓ QUICK FYNBOS QUIZ!
Can you spot the intruder? Which of these is NOT native to South Africa?

A) Sugarbush (Protea repens)

B.) Port Jackson Willow (Acacia saligna)

C) Spiderhead (Serruria aemula)

(Drop your guess A, B, or C in the comments! 👇)

Planting possibilities 🌿

Indigenous plants are full of surprises. From intelligent ways of surviving fire to flowers designed to guide their pollinators in, every species has a story and a role to play in the wider ecosystem.

Choosing indigenous means creating gardens that use less water, welcome local biodiversity and work with Nature rather than against it.

Come explore the possibilities at HAPPY BY NATURE, Gate 2, Kirstenbosch.

Can traditional storytelling bridge the gaps between indigenous knowledge systems, conservation, and horticulture? 🌿

This Heritage Day, join us at HAPPY BY NATURE for a meaningful morning exploring indigenous knowledge, plant medicine and the living traditions that connect people to land and Nature.

We’ll be joined by traditional healers uMhlekazi uLadum’izulu (Noxolo Sekhobo) and uMhlekazi uHlahlindlela (Nomalanga Ruiters), who will share stories, insights and practices rooted in generations of wisdom.

Together, we’ll explore plants traditionally associated with women’s health and wellbeing, sacred cleansing and intergenerational wellbeing, as well as the journey and philosophy of traditional healing.

Alongside HAPPY BY NATURE’s conservationist and horticulturists, we’ll also look at respectful harvesting, conservation, and how some of these indigenous plants can be grown and cared for at home.

The morning will close with an open panel and Q&A - a space for curiosity, reflection and conversation.
