Damascene is the last major new-wave release of the year, and the w**es are nothing short of profound.🌟 This is your last chance to secure exceptional Syrah and old-vine whites from the lauded 2025 vintage.

In partnership with David Curl, w**emaker Jean Smit strives to produce the finest regional expressions from distinct, often extreme terroirs across South Africa. Their latest releases showcase the 2025 vintage – and they include some of the best young reds we’ve seen.

THE SYRAHS

Damascene’s regional Syrahs are transparent and precise. The Stellenbosch Syrah 2025 is sourced from the magic Polkadraai hills, while the Swartland Syrah 2025 is all schist – a vivid, savoury and brooding snapshot of the terroir. The Ceres Plateau Syrah 2025 is grown at over 1,000m and delivers tightly coiled energy. There’s no need to separate these w**es – they’re all defining expressions of Jean’s talent and vision.

THE BORDEAUX RED VARIETIES

The Stellenbosch Cabernet Franc 2025, from a rocky Bottelary hilltop site, shows striking concentration and nervous tension born from poor granitic soils. Alongside it, the Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 offers a modern take on a classic; it blends fruit from disparate granitic wards (Polkadraai and Helderberg) for delicious depth and structure.

THE OLD-VINE WHITES

The superb Franschhoek Sémillon 2025 hails from the La Chataigne vineyard on the banks of the Franschhoek River, encompassing ancient bush-vine plantings now confirmed to be from 1932, as well as a vineyard from the 1960s. The Swartland Chenin Blanc 2025 is a w**e of incredible finesse. It’s a blend of two mountainous sites and opens with a burst of crushed apple freshness, white stone and wild florals. Rounding out the whites, the Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc 2025 draws from shale, greywacke and granite soils, where vines planted as early as 1972 have produced a magnificent w**e that’s deeply complex.

Grapefruit, apricot, dried herbs, green olives, limes and saltiness. This mouthwatering goodness is exactly what comes to mind when thinking of the coastal Alvarinhos from Portuguese w**e godfather Anselmo Mendes – a pioneer for elegant, dry whites in the Vinho Verde region.🌟

Anselmo Mendes Muros Antigos Alvarinho 2023 is silky and fresh with terrific mineral texture thanks to time spent on the lees. From the northern tip of Portugal, this white w**e sings with sushi, oysters, light salads and herby kabeljou (cod).

At only R195 per bottle, Anselmo’s crisp Muros Antigos Escolha 2023 is a dream. It’s an aromatic and exuberant blend of Alvarinho, Loureiro and Avesso, hand-picked and gently worked to maintain that beautiful purity.

Finally, we’re happy to introduce you to their Tinto Pardusco 2023 – a low-alcohol, crunchy red that will take you comfortably from spring into summer. ‘Such value for money’, this blend is ‘juicy, bright, pure and delicious’ (Jamie Goode).

Anselmo Mendes, locally known as Mr. Alvarinho, comes from a family of farmers in Vinho Verde. He started his eponymous brand in 1998 and won W**emaker of the Year from Revista de Vinhos the same year. They farm sustainably in all three Vinho Verde sub-regions, combining traditional and experimental methods in the cellar to produce Alvarinhos like you’ve never seen before. Gotfried Mocke’s reputation as a great w**emaker was established by creating benchmark Franschhoek Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Once he joined the visionary Marc Kent of Boekenhoutskloof in 2015, they embarked on a journey to create exceptional expressions of these varieties together. A vineyard was established, a brand launched, and Cap Maritime was born.🌟

Like Porseleinberg, the project stands apart and its identity is now clearly formed. Hemel-en-Aarde was identified as their prime location, and, as expected from this team, the w**es are superb.

The 2024 Chardonnay is reminiscent of Gotfried’s finest efforts – elegant, judiciously oaked, welcoming, and built to mature in the cellar.

The Cap Maritime Pinot Noir 2024 left us in awe. A w**e of subtlety, the focus is on structure, purity and depth rather than on overt fruit, with sensational tannins that create a long, persistent finish.

Savage Red 2024 is the highlight of Duncan’s new releases. The whole set is extraordinary, offering immediate aromatic pleasure alongside the structure to go the distance. Due to increased scarcity and an incredible quality-to-price ratio, the new vintages are flying out of the cellar.🌟

The 97-point Savage Red is Duncan's greatest expression yet from this special site in Polkadraai. It’s densely packed and layered with florals and deep-set fruit, showing attractive white pepper aromatics and terrific ageing potential.

A w**e of power and precision, the 95-point 2025 White is a classy Sauv-Sem blend. The concentration of citrus, fennel bulb and blackcurrant leaf is spot on, and the ‘evolution of the blackcurrant is going to be so exciting,’ notes Duncan. The palate is long and ever-so-slightly grippy with a saline undertow. Superb!

Follow the Line is better than ever. The 96-point 2025, from a Cinsault vineyard in Darling, boasts all the crushed roses, lavender and white pepper spice we love. It’s intensely flavourful yet light-footed, ending with a chalky, energetic finish.

Klein Constantia’s Vin de Constance is one of the most legendary w**es in the world.🌟

Few w**es can rival the history, precision and global recognition of Vin de Constance. Under Matt Day’s guidance, it’s become even finer and more focused. The 2023 is incredibly elegant, offering notes of citrus blossom and a floral hint of acacia wood, leading to a balanced and detailed palate. This vintage will last for decades to come and makes the perfect gift, celebratory drink, anniversary keepsake or birth-year commemoration.

Vin de Constance is often compared to the king of sweet w**es, Château d’Yquem. However, its production is fundamentally different, using raisin-like Muscat de Frontignan grapes ripened on the vines – usually with no botrytis.

A w**e of guaranteed longevity, Vin de Constance has graced the tables of kings and queens and been immortalised by the likes of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Nelson Mandela. We've had the privilege of tasting the 1875 (in 2017) and the 1993 (in 2023), and both were incredible!

The 2025 Van Loggerenberg w**es are some of the most compelling releases yet. Lukas can’t contain his excitement about this vintage, noting that the ‘clarity and precision on offer are unbelievable’.🌟

He believes that the Paardeberg is the mecca of Chenin Blanc, and his Kameraderie 2025 is from two vineyards planted here in the 1960s. It's all about delicacy – emphasising detail and freshness over weight. The w**e is initially slow to unfurl, then opens to lemon and lime, gorgeous white florals and fennel flower. On the palate it’s more inward and focused, with softer citrus, layers of flavour and drive.

His distinctive Graft Syrah 2025 hails from the celebrated Stellenbosch Polkadraai Hills and carries that hallmark olive tapenade, violet and peppercorn complexity that’s seen in many of SA’s greatest Syrahs. The fruit is bright and the tannins pinpoint, and it will only improve with time. If you love Syrah, you should be drinking this.

These are some of the finest white w**es we have tasted this year. David and Nadia are not only masters of Chenin but also of their beloved Swartland region, and it’s impossible to overstate the outstanding quality of their 2025s. A step up from any previous release, these w**es represent the best of old-vine Chenin and Grenache Noir from 100% dryland bush vines.

The 98-point Aristargos 2025 is brimming with energy and has extraordinary length. A 6-variety, Chenin-led blend from 13 different vineyards, it’s a w**e of ‘exceptional refinement’, says Christian Eedes.

For us, the 2025 Chenin is the highlight of the release.🌟 Hailing from 9 different vineyards, 24 pickings, and plantings from 1968 to 1986, this 97-pointer is ‘rich without excess’ and ‘creamy without heaviness’ (Christian Eedes). The 2025 ‘unfolds in layered fashion before a long, persistent finish’, showing both power and precision.

The 95-point 2025 Grenache is unlike anything they’ve produced before, with ‘more gravitas’, agree David and Nadia. Still perfumed, yet darker in colour with intensity and finesse in spades, it's a must for Grenache enthusiasts.

Last year’s Elpidios was so impressive we weren’t sure how it could get better, but it has! The 2024 is ‘very satisfying’, writes Eedes, scoring it 95 points. A Grenache-based blend that’s slow to unfurl but becomes moreish with time in the glass, it’s aged for 18 months in bottle before release and captures the Swartland’s sunny fruit and savoury complexity.

This is a superb set of w**es – and the vintage to stock up on.

The MR de Compostella 2023 is a w**e of seamless complexity and power. It stands shoulder to shoulder with the world's finest Bordeaux blends and represents the pinnacle of what Stellenbosch can produce.💫

More than a decade ago, Neal Martin awarded both the 2008 and 2009 MR de Compostella 96 points – an almost unheard-of score for a South African red at the time. Given his expertise across Bordeaux, Burgundy and South Africa, it’s no small achievement that the MR Vesperi 2024 ranks among the highest-scoring white w**es in his recent SA report. Balanced, persistent and exceptionally fine, it makes a compelling case for South African fine white w**e at its very best.

The 2023 De Compostella is a blend of 30% Cabernet Franc, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Malbec, 17% Petit Verdot and 8% Merlot. In the words of Mzo and Bruwer, it’s the work of two w**emaker friends in pursuit of excellence – a blend that is far greater than the sum of its parts. It also has the pedigree to age remarkably well.

The same approach underpins the Vesperi 2024, a blend of 41% Chenin Blanc, 37% Sauvignon Blanc and 22% Sémillon. If you love w**es of depth and finesse with flavour in spades, this is for you.
