Even sanctioned tournaments, both with prize support from the store, as well as promotional material from the many game suppliers. It's a place to interact with like minded people, to enjoy a few games after school or work, to relax on the weekend, or even just to pop in and say hello to the regulars you know have become live-in furniture.
