Hot take: you don't need more clothes for winter. You need the right system ❄️
Most people grab the thickest jacket they own and call it a day. Then they're sweating on the climb, freezing at the top, and miserable by camp.
Here's what actually works — the layering system:
Layer 1 — The Base ()
This is the one doing the real work. A good moisture-wicking base layer pulls sweat away from your skin and keeps you dry. Wet = cold. Dry = warm. Simple. First Ascent's base layers are built for exactly this; lightweight, fast-drying, and genuinely warm without the bulk.
Layer 2 — The Mid
Your fleece or insulating layer. This is your heat trap. It holds warm air close to your body. Don't skip it because you think the jacket is enough.. it isn't.
Layer 3 — The Shell
Wind. Rain. Cold air. This is what keeps all of that out. A good windproof or waterproof shell over your base and mid means you stay comfortable no matter what KZN throws at you.
The magic is that you can add or remove layers as conditions change which in the Drakensberg or the Midlands can mean a 20°C swing between sunrise and summit. 🏔️
We stock First Ascent base layers in-store at Bush & Bundu, Pietermaritzburg and we'll help you build the right kit for your specific trip, terrain, and budget.
