ASTRAY LEADERS
Extract from CHAPTER EIGHT
****
Sometimes in November Zac took three days teaching me practically how to drive a car. This began two days after he had connected me with a certain Nigerian guy, who had made a fake drivers license for me at my expense. My practical driving lessons took place at Diepsloot sports ground. I couldn't drive before Zac offered me those practical driving lessons. Perhaps the fact that my father never owned a car was the main reason I was not interested in learning how to drive, not until one day when I embarrassed myself in Polokwane. Let me cut to the chase: One morning I was woken up by my brother in law' s phone call. He insisted that I accompany him to Polokwane. Well, to his insistence I submitted. I recollect he was driving his Mercedes Benz CLC 200 Kompressor. What a smooth journey we had that it was only less than an hour drive from Jane Furse to Polokwane. On our arrival in town, my brother in law asked if I wanted to accompany him into the store. Apathetically, I said: "No," with a weak voice.
"Okay then, I won't take long," he flashed a smile at me and rushed into the store, leaving me inside his car with a key still pierced in the ignition. I then capitalized on that by moving from the passenger seat and occupied the driver's seat so that everyone around could be convinced that that car was mine. In front of my brother in law's car was parked a red Mini Cooper S. It seemed to me that that Mini Cooper S had been parked there for an hour before our arrival. Most of the people, who had come to town looked at my brother in law's car and showed approval. They were plainly convinced that I was the owner of that German Machine. And I so liked the feeling of being perceived that way. While I was sitting in the comfort of the seat that didn't belong to me, my attention got captured by a young lady, who emerged from the same store my brother in law had entered. The young lady had on a short purple dress and stilettos. She was in such a comfort walk. The distance from where she emerged decreased quickly, as she advanced in my direction. "Hallo, brother," courteously, the young lady greeted me once she got to my brother in law's car. Just like most of the people , who had come to town, she was as well convinced that that car was mine. With a smile, I stuck my head out of the car window and charmingly began, "Hallo, gorgeous." She smiled back and said this, her courtesy preserved, "Can you please reverse your car so that I can be able to reverse mine out?" She pointed at the red Mini Cooper S, which was parked in front of my brother in law's car. With the realization that I didn't know how to drive,I felt nervous sweating trickling down my face...
