Adele's Mohair

Adele's Mohair We specialise in an artistic array of hand spun & dyed mohair and wool hand knitting yarns & accessories created by rural South African women.

Adéle started the business in 1983 and employs 30+ women and men at their rural workshop which is located between the port cities of East London and Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The Mohair, Wool, Silk, Bamboo and Alpaca yarns are hand dyed under Adele’s ‘keen eye for colour’ before being hand spun into the most creative array of hand knitting yarns imaginable. The yarns can be hand knitted into a

variety of finished fashion and home accessories. They ascribe to the current trend of recycle and reuse which has created opportunities for innovative and contemporary design of new products. Small quantities are accommodated. The luxurious natural fibres of Mohair (from Angora goats) and Merino wool (from sheep) are locally sourced and are of the finest quality.

Our studio sources mohair yarn right here in the Eastern Cape. This means that it travels a very short distance from the processing and spinning mill to reach us. We attempt at every stage, to support local, and to reduce our transport carbon footprint.

When Adele is not busy in the studio, designing patterns, or knitting, she can be found walking in her beautiful garden which surrounds the studio, or taking the dogs for a walk on the nearby beach. The Sunshine Coast is full of fresh air, a sea breeze and a great environment in which to create.

For over 40+ years a team of women at Adele’s Mohair has shaped the brand into what it is today. Their hard work, skills, and dedication bring our craft alive. We wish them and all of our partners a happy South African Women’s Day. May we all uplift, empower and celebrate the women in our communities.

Hand-dyed skeins of yarn drying in the air, wind, and sun. By doing this, the fibre is not put through harsh dryers, which can alter its soft texture. This natural approach means less electricity and other resources are used.🔆🧶

One of the greatest privileges of my journey has been working alongside an incredible group of women who inspire me every single day.

Many of the women in our team come from Xhosa communities, a culture that has produced remarkable leaders such as Nelson Mandela and is rich in history, tradition, and values. Over the years, I have learned that understanding and respecting each other's cultures is an important part of building a successful business and a strong team.

These women are resilient, hardworking, and fiercely supportive of one another. They face challenges with strength, celebrate each other's successes, and pour their hearts into every item they create. Their determination and craftsmanship are reflected in every stitch.

At Adéle's Mohair, we don't just create beautiful mohair products—we create opportunities, build confidence, and support one another as we grow together.

I am grateful every day for what these amazing women have taught me about resilience, community, and the true meaning of strength. ❤️
