A small and much-needed triumph in the McLeod & Savage scent laboratory.

After many trials, adjustments and beautifully fragrant failures, our pear experiment has finally succeeded.

The result is luminous and true: the cool green skin of a freshly cut pear, its delicate floral sweetness, and that soft, watery flesh that seems almost impossible to capture in scent.

It is fresh without becoming sugary, elegant without losing its brightness.

Our pear accord will soon be released as part of the McLeod & Savage fragrance workshops, where guests will be among the first to blend with it and create something entirely their own.

My favourite time of year yields my favourite scent in the world.

One that stubbornly refuses to be bottled.

I’ve tried to capture it, describe it, pin it down, but it simply will not behave.

It is creamy, golden and intoxicating, with something almost tropical and nocturnal about it. A fragrance that belongs to crisp air, glossy leaves and one enormous trumpet flower opening in the garden. The moment you remove it from the living bloom, the magic seems to vanish.

Some perfumes are meant to be worn. This one insists on being visited.

The Living Archive

I started making perfume at the age of 14, when I was told I would lose my sense of smell.

I panicked 😅 I knew absolutely less than nothing about fragrance.

I thought if you placed a scented item in a jar and closed the lid, that would preserve it. I wanted to preserve the smells of everything and everyone I loved.

I am so glad that I never gave up trying. McLeod & Savage was created more than a decade ago when I had absolutely no idea who I was.

Like a baby, I've grown into my nose.

My fragrance oils are not produced through rapid extraction methods.

All begin as what I now call Memory Macerations.
Botanical materials are slowly infused into oil and allowed to rest for months, sometimes years. My oldest Neroli is from 1994.
New ingredients are added as seasons change, creating living fragrance archives that evolve over time.

Some I share, most I don't.

Each vessel becomes a record of places, people, weather, gardens, grief, joy and memory.

No two archives are exactly alike.

What gratitude I have to find like-minded noses.

Growing up in South Africa meant that with an ever weakening Rand, department store fragrance became slowly unattainable. When I immigrated to Australia, suddenly fragrance became accessible again. When I discovered Rien, I was spellbound. I bought it instead of groceries.

Moving back to SA and a burgeoning career enabled me to splurge on scent again. Gypsy Water was a signature for years, as well as Coromandel. Like new girlfriends met in a bathroom queue at a nightclub, they were special and will be remembered fondly.

Time for new memories.

So much of a person I love is tied up in how they smell. A scent transports me decades.... what a gift.

The fragrances which scent my memories, a series.

My father, my mother, my sister, my grandmother, my first teacher, my first perfume, the scent of my first boyfriend, travelling to Amsterdam.

I hope one day I can create a scent that can leave such an imprint on the user- a lifetime of memory.
