Hello, book friends.
Because I want to be authentic here, and because I’ve let you into my life to know me beyond the pages of my books, I feel I must share this newness in my life. It will explain to you why I haven’t posted anything for a few days and why I may be quieter than normal for a little bit.
On Thursday at lunchtime I lost my mom.
She wasn’t ill, she was (mostly) fit and happy, and passed quite suddenly and without warning.
My family and I are reeling from the sadness and the loss.
She followed my page, was always enthusiastic with the other members here, and while she’d blush, I think she’d get a kick out of this post.
My mom was the most extraordinarily colourful human. There was no one quite like her. I know we all say things like that, but in my mom’s case, it was true.
She was eccentric and offbeat. Incredibly creative with an eye for beauty and detail. Much of who I am is because she was.
She encouraged my art and creativity. And wonderfully, she made me a reader.
My mother had beautiful taste in literature, and was constantly buying me and my brother books. She chose them for the art and the story equally. Right until the end of her good, long life, she loved children’s books. She bought them for herself. Pop ups, and fairy tails and everything in between.
She loved Good Night, South Africa. In the early stages of its becoming, I would show her the artwork, ask for her thoughts and she’d give feedback.
She loved the ocean pages with their onomatopoeia and wild waves. And the page with all the birds. Probably because there’s so much purple! She really loved colour.
She was colour herself.
Reader, you would have loved her! She was funny and a good listener and intelligent, and she’d have you telling her your whole history within minutes of you meeting her! Truly! She loved meeting people, and people gravitated to her!
She was FABULOUS! BOLD! LOUD!! ALIVE!!!!
I know it’s early days. I know I’ll get used to this new normal. But right now, my life feels a bit drabber because she’s no longer a part of it.
I will keep creating and posting, but I’ll need your likes in lieu of hers!
Anyway, because you’re getting all of me, the person who created some of the stories you love, and because I set out to be entirely me here with you, I felt I needed to be honest about this too.
With love in my grief,
Jen xx

Rest well, mom. Keep cheering for me. I love you always. ❤️♾️✨
