It is a very rare opportunity to work on something that has great personal meaning but I have been blessed this year.
The work we did on the windows at The Hill Presbyterian Church, Central is just one of these very special projects.

Unfortunately, during the pandemic, some bored and recently released children decided to use the stained glass windows of the hall adjacent to the church building itself for target practice in the art of throwing stones. Unfortunately the windows were left far beyond any form of rescue and so we were commissioned to replace them with something a little more modern. The brief was to make use of the church Logo and colours to produce something that tied the hall to the church while still allowing it to stand on its own.

At the top of the piece is a beautiful stained glass "Dome" window that catches the suns rays and throws beautiful colours down and throuout the hall itself, bringing life and light into the space.
As a small homage to the original windows, a few pieces of glass that were salvaged from the original windows have been incorporated into the new window.

Cost and aesthetics play a part in every project and to balance these two the option to use a sandblasted glass design on the lower windows was chosen. Again the church logo was utilized as inspiration for the design and (thanks to a suggestion from one of the church members) the rays from the dome window were continued down into the sandblasted design. This created a cohesive design despite the use of two very different decorative glass disciplines.

The end result is a brighter hall with beautiful feature windows that are stunning from both inside and outside. We could not be more proud of and grateful for this opportunity and hope the church is able to enjoy the new installation for many generations to come.

The pics show some of the end result and some of the work in progress including Travis who was busy adding the finishing touches of paintwork to leave the installation neat and tidy.

Unfortunately the photos do not do justice to the sandblasted windows but we will keep trying different times of day to see if we can get some worthwhile pics of them too.

Sometimes its all about TAKING RISKS!

Sometimes they fall flat but sometimes they pay off in the best of ways.

We recently had the privilage, honour and opportunity to work on the beautiful Stained Glass windows in the currently under renovation Durban High Court building.

We took the risk at our own cost of travel and time (not something we usually do but the potential rewards here were definitely worth it) to go to site in Durban to meet with the contractors and discuss the issues they faced with the stained glass windows. The risk we took paid off when they awarded us the contract to effect the repairs necessary.

Unfortunately the biggest issue was not the windows themselves or the cost but the EXTREMELY short timeframe they had to get the work done. This meant that most "Normal" methods of achieving the desired results were immediately ruled out as there simply was not time to do the necessary work.
We had almost no time to source matching glass in textures and colours and no time to try to match the stunning design work that is part of the existing installation. We also had to honour the existing heritage status of the installation meaning that we had to preserve as much of the existing glass and design as possible while while still effecting the needed repairs.

Unfortunately one panel was severely damaged and could not be repaired on site. We removed this panel and rebuilt it using as much of the existing glass as was usable and replacing only that which was missing or beyond reuse.
The end result was a stunningly accurate reproduction which when side by side with its partner in the window looks almost identical.

There were a few other shattered or completely missing panes in a few of the panels around the precinct which we were successful in replacing in situ. Barring one pane, the replacement glass panes are almost identical to the original in colour and texture meaning they are almost un-noticeable in the installation.

The balance of the cracked pieces were "repaired" using a non destructive method which effectively covers the crack. While not an ideal repair method, it seals the cracked pane from the elements, stabilizes it and provides time and surety that when the very necessary full refurbishment process is undertaken, these pieces can be preserved and possibly even reused within the refurbishment process.

The project provides Starlight Decor with the prestige of having worked on these unique and national monument status windows which is absolutely unbelievable. It is truly a very special and incredible honour to have worked on them and to have been a small part of preserving these stunning windows for generations to come to enjoy. We are now part of a very select few artists still alive that can say they have had this privilege and honour.

This pretty stained glass cupboard door holds special sentimental value but after an accident it arrived with us in pieces.
I forgot to take photos of the before but these are during repairs and after repairs..

Luckily the original artist, Jose Manuel, was able to supply us with the digital artwork which made this considerably easier.
