African Expressions was born from the desire for Africa to share her natural beauty with the rest of the world. Through our unique range of yarns we express the essence of that which makes Africa magical. Our network of local farmers breed stock bearing excellent fibres to ensure our yarns are naturally soft to the touch, easy to knit and luxuriously versatile. 365 days a year, 7 days a week, our farmers enjoy a close and special relationship with their herd and the animals enjoy a life unsurpassed, ensuring the production of a better quality of natural fibre for the benefit of all lovers of knitting. From farm to store, each and every process is handled with the utmost of care to ensure that the fibres are treated delicately and with the respect that they deserve. Our range of select colours is inspired by the landscapes of South Africa - from sunrise to sunset. Each colour represents one small element that makes Africa, Africa. Our heart and soul is knitted firmly into Africa and would like to invite you to join us in this “African Expressions” Experience.

Pick flowers for your table, find a shady spot beneath a tree, and let the garden set the scene and pace.🪴🍋

This Garden Day South Africa, we’re celebrating the simple joys of reconnecting with nature and slowing down enough to notice the little things.

Much like gardening, knitting invites us to pause, engage our senses and find joy in the process. A little time spent with our hands, a little room to breathe, and something beautiful to grow.

Happy Garden Day! 🌼🇿🇦 Garden Day SA

The Karoo is at the heart of South Africa’s mohair industry, and it’s hard not to find inspiration in its colours, textures and landscapes.

The soft, brushed blue of our Love yarn, in shade 3217, stands out against the warm tones of sun-warmed earth and the bright spring wildflowers of the Karoo.

A colourful contrast, beautiful texture, and the perfect setting for a handmade piece.

Heritage Day for many is a day to reflect on those who have come before us and helped mold the world we live in today. For African Expressions, today we are reflecting on our origins. Back in 2011, SAMIL Natural Fibres launched African Expressions with 3 yarns. These yarns were Joy, Harmony and Love. Each yarn was available in 12 colours. Due to the support of talented makers, our yarn offering has grown to include a total of 14 yarns with more than 400 colours. We are proud of the yarns we have curated to fuel creativity. Our gratitude to each and every maker who has supported us overflows.

Happy Heritage Day!

Today we welcome not only a new day but also a new season. Spring is a time of renewal. Nature comes to life with budding trees, new flowers, buzzing bees and bird songs filling the air. We find ourselves surrounded by inspiration for colour combinations, silhouettes and textures.

Do seasonal changes influence your yarnie projects?

Dear Dad, Pa, Pops, uTata,

Thank you for being there when times get tough. Thank you for being there when a helping hand is needed. Thank you for accepting the passion that drives the collection of yarn, the fascination with craft and fibre. Thank you for the motivation to keep trying new techniques, stitiches, and projects to hone skills that were never though possible. Thank you for being the coach, team, and cheerleader in life. Most importantly, thank you for being you.

Happy Father's Dayy 💙

The youthful soul is driven by curiosity. Playfully learning and facing life's challenges with fierce courage. Belief in expressing creativity in everything they do.

It is thanks to many South African youths whose creativity, talents, and courage helped shape a democratic South Africa. We celebrate them today with every stitch today 💙

A skein of yarn holds so much potential. Through creativity, mastered skills and passion, a single strand can be transformed in to wearable art. Yes, any item that is made by hand no matter the simplicity is a work of art.

Our skeins of Inspires hold the potential to become anything your mind, skills and passion can dream of. Perhaps a pair of felted slippers, a beanie, a pullover or a comfy cardigan. Unleash the potential.
