NEW POWERBRAKE KIT FITTED? PLEASE DONโT SKIP THE BEDDING-IN PROCESS.
The bedding-in process is what allows the pad and disc surfaces to establish proper contact and create the correct transfer film on the disc face. This thin layer of pad material is a key part of achieving consistent braking performance, good pedal feel, reduced noise and long disc and pad life.
Step 1: First 300 km
Drive moderately for approximately 300 km after fitment.
During this period:
Use medium brake pedal pressure
Do not test the full performance of the new brakes yet
Avoid hard braking unless it is an emergency
Do not drag the brakes or left-foot brake
Remember that long open-road trips do not really count, because the brakes are not being used often enough
This first stage allows the pads and discs to establish proper surface contact.
Step 2: Controlled heat cycle
After the first 300 km, find a safe, quiet road with no traffic behind you.
Drive slowly for a few kilometres and use the brakes gently to bring them up to moderate temperature. This helps avoid thermal shock.
Then perform 6-8 hard braking applications from freeway speeds down to around 20 to 30 km/h.
Do not bring the vehicle to a complete stop during this process.
Between each stop, accelerate back to freeway speed as safely and quickly as possible. The goal is to build heat into the discs and pads in a controlled way.
You may feel the brake performance reduce slightly and you may notice a little smoke from the pads. This can be normal during bedding-in.
Step 3: Cool them properly
After the bedding stops, drive for at least 10 km using the brakes as little as possible. This allows airflow to cool the discs and pads evenly.
Then park the vehicle and let the brakes cool completely, ideally for at least 30 minutes.
Do not sit stationary with very hot brakes clamped under heavy pedal pressure.
Why this matters
Incorrect bedding-in can lead to poor pad filming, reduced performance, increased noise, brake judder and uneven deposits on the disc surface.
Correct bedding-in helps your Powerbrake kit deliver the performance, pedal feel and consistency it was designed for.
