‎THE WRONG GRAVE
‎Chapter 21
‎
‎---
‎
‎At the Storage Facility...
‎
‎
‎The fire spread through the corridor with terrifying speed smoke forced its way under the storage unit door Kamo wrapped his jacket around his nose.
‎"We need another way out!"
‎Tshepo scanned the room his eyes landed on the old motorcycle.
‎"The wall behind it!"
‎
‎Together they shoved the motorcycle aside behind it was an old wooden panel Emily had hidden with shelves Tshepo kicked it Nothing he kicked it again.
‎
‎The rotten wood cracked open fresh air rushed inside.
‎"There!"
‎The opening led into a narrow maintenance tunnel Kamo grabbed Emily's files, the necklaces and the family tree before following Tshepo into the tunnel moments later... The storage unit exploded into flames.
‎
‎---
‎
‎Outside the Storage Facility...
‎
‎
‎Firefighters arrived as thick black smoke filled the sky people gathered across the street, filming with their phones Dr. Masebe watched from inside a parked black sedan the female motorcyclist looked through binoculars.
‎
‎"The fire should've trapped them."
‎Dr. Masebe remained calm.
‎"Emily always prepared an escape."
‎"You knew about the tunnel?"
‎"I suspected."
‎She lowered the binoculars.
‎"So they survived."
‎He smiled faintly.
‎"Good."
‎She frowned.
‎"You keep saying 'good' every time they survive."
‎Dr. Masebe looked at her.
‎"A game ends the moment all the players die."
‎
‎---
‎
‎Behind the Storage Facility...
‎
‎
‎Kamo and Tshepo emerged from the tunnel covered in soot both men struggled to catch their breath Tshepo looked back at the burning building.
‎"They tried to erase everything."
‎Kamo opened the backpack Emily's evidence was still safe He let out a sigh of relief.
‎
‎Then his phone rang It was Sarah.
‎"Kamo!"
‎Her voice shook.
‎"Where are you?"
‎"I'm okay."
‎"No, you're not."
‎"What happened?"
‎Sarah hesitated.
‎"Someone broke into the house."
‎
‎---
‎
‎At the Mokoena Family Home...
‎
‎
‎Police officers examined the broken kitchen window drawers had been emptied cupboards left open Detective Tshepo arrived twenty minutes later.
‎"What was taken?"
‎Sarah looked around.
‎"They searched every room."
‎"But?"
‎"They only stole one thing."
‎"What?"
‎Mpho's diary.
‎
‎---
‎
‎At an Unknown Location...
‎
‎
‎Lillian Khumalo slowly flipped through the stolen diary she smiled.
‎"So this is what Mpho was hiding."
‎One of her men spoke.
‎"We searched the whole house for that book."
‎Lillian nodded.
‎"And it was worth it."
‎She stopped at the final page a small photograph fell onto the table her smile disappeared.
‎"No..."
‎
‎The man looked confused.
‎"What is it?"
‎Lillian picked up the photograph it showed three newborn babies but this picture was different each baby's ankle bracelet was clearly visible she whispered
‎"Emily you clever woman."
‎
‎---
‎
‎At Rosebank Police Station...
‎
‎
‎The forensic team carefully examined the three silver necklaces one technician called Tshepo over.
‎"Detective."
‎"What did you find?"
‎"They're not ordinary necklaces."
‎He unscrewed the pendant marked K Inside.. a tiny rolled-up piece of paper.
‎Tshepo carefully removed it there were only six words written inside.
‎«The church remembers everything.»
‎
‎---
‎
‎At Grace's Cell...
‎
‎
‎Grace sat alone a young guard quietly entered carrying food as he placed the tray down, he whispered
‎"Don't react."
‎Grace kept looking at the floor the guard slipped something into her hand a key he whispered again,
‎"Tonight."
‎Then he walked out Grace slowly opened her hand attached to the key was a tiny note.
‎It read:
‎«Emily kept her promise.»
‎
‎Grace closed her eyes for the first time in years she smiled.
‎
‎---
‎
‎At the Old Church...
‎
‎
‎Following the clue from the necklace, Kamo and Tshepo arrived at a small abandoned church on the outskirts of Johannesburg the building looked forgotten broken stained-glass windows dust-covered pews a crooked wooden cross.
‎
‎Kamo frowned.
‎"Emily came here?"
‎Tshepo nodded.
‎"The question is why."
‎As they walked toward the altar an elderly caretaker appeared from a side door.
‎"I've been expecting you."
‎Both men froze.
‎"You know us?"
‎The old man smiled.
‎"I knew your parents."
‎
‎He looked at Kamo.
‎"And I baptised you."
‎Kamo frowned.
‎"My parents brought me here?"
‎The caretaker slowly shook his head.
‎"No."
‎He looked directly into Kamo's eyes.
‎"Emily did."
‎Silence filled the church.
‎
‎---
‎
‎At the Unknown Location...
‎
‎
‎Lillian stood by a large map hanging on the wall every movement of Kamo, Lesego, Tshepo, and Sarah had been marked with coloured pins one of her men entered.
‎"They've gone to the church."
‎Lillian smiled.
‎"Excellent."
‎"Should we send someone?"
‎"No."
‎She picked up the photograph of the three babies.
‎"The church won't give them answers."
‎"It will only give them hope."
‎She quietly added
‎"And hope..is much easier to destroy."
‎
‎---
‎
‎At the Church...
‎
‎
‎The caretaker disappeared into a small room and returned carrying an old wooden chest it was covered in dust.
‎"I promised her I would only open this when all three boys finally stood together."
‎Kamo looked around.
‎"But we're only two."
‎The old man smiled sadly.
‎"I know."
‎He slowly unlocked the chest anyway Inside three baptism certificates one for Kamo, one for Lesego and one for... Sipho Ndlovu.
‎Beneath them lay a sealed envelope written across it were the words:
‎«Do Not Open Until All Three Brothers Are Alive Together Again.»
‎Kamo reached for the envelope the caretaker gently stopped him.
‎"No."
‎"You've waited thirty-two years."
‎"You can wait a little longer."
‎At that exact moment the church doors slammed shut a slow clap echoed through the empty sanctuary.
‎
‎Everyone turned a tall man stepped out from the shadows perfectly dressed, calm and smiling. He looked directly at Kamo then at Tshepo finally, he said,
‎"You're looking in the wrong generation."
‎Kamo frowned.
‎"Who are you?"
‎The man smiled.
‎"My name..."
‎He paused.
‎"...is Daniel Masebe."
‎He looked almost exactly like Dr. Kabelo Masebe except he was much younger and before anyone could react...
‎
‎He added the one sentence that changed everything.
‎«"I'm Dr. Kabelo Masebe's son... and I've been trying to stop my father for years."»
