Introducing our Isihlangu Earrings 🛡️
The Isihlangu is far more than a Zulu war shield — it is the ultimate icon of 19th-century Zulu military power and cultural heritage.
In the early 1800s, King Shaka kaSenzangakhona revolutionized warfare when he developed the large cow-hide Isihlangu. He transformed Zulu warriors into a formidable force, introducing the short stabbing spear (iklwa) and a new way of fighting — using the shield to barge the enemy off balance, hook their shield aside, and strike.
Each shield was more than protection. It was identity. Shaka assigned specific hide patterns and colours to each impi (regiment) — black for young regiments, white for senior regiments. The shields were not owned by individuals, but by the kingdom, stored in the royal homesteads and issued for duty. This is where the Zulu saying comes from: “to be under somebody’s shield” means to be under their protection.
We have reimagined this symbol of strength, protection, and pride into an earring for the modern African woman.
