After spending many hours restoring a German violin made by Xavier Kerschensteiner in 1878 (see more information and photos in previous posts), the final result is shown below.
When Gilah Kellner brought her own violin to me in January to be serviced, she asked for a loan violin while her violin was with me. At the end of the week Gilah send me a message saying that they want to buy the violin. In her own words - 'it is beautiful, well refurnished, and it has many colours to explore.'
I am so grateful that the violin is now in Gilah's hands. She is one of the most promising young violinists in South Africa and her achievements are too many to mention here. What a rewarding journey it was!

The German violin after restoration of the varnish. Despite the remaining scars picked up during its past life of 146 years, it is an 'attractive' and valuable instrument.

The end of the restoration of the German violin is in sight. The varnish needed extensive repair and touch up. Some scars resulting from indifferent use and (unsuccessful) repairs during the past 146 years will stay forever. But I know that when it is played nobody will see the scars but only enjoy the beautiful sound. Below are photos showing the unrestored varnish of the violin. My next post will have a video showing the violin after the varnish restoration has been done.

A German violin made in 1878 belonging to a well known violin teacher came up for sale recently. It was played on by various professional violinists and they all were most impressed by the quality of the sound. In the end the violin was not sold, to my mind mainly because of the bad condition it was in. It has been very badly repaired in 1951, but has served the the previous owner well through all the years.
I decided to buy the violin, also because or my personal interest in the violin and knowing the previous owner. The repair/restoration is now nearing completion. Below are two photos of the inside of the top plate before and after restoration.
