Thinking of switching careers to work with plants?

For the three people we spoke to, the move wasn't about earning more money. It was about finding work that felt more meaningful, creative and connected to nature. The reality? Less stress in some ways, new challenges in others – but no regrets.

Here are three lessons they learned along the way:

"Not trying felt scarier than trying." Former anaesthetist Shilpa Reddy swapped operating theatres for floristry. Her biggest lesson? Running your own business is about much more than being good at your craft: marketing, pricing and cash flow all matter too.

"I was poor but happy." After 13 years in HR, Sarah Wilson-Frost retrained through an RHS apprenticeship. She says horticulture is far more skilled and varied than many people realise, and she'd rather have a better quality of life than a bigger salary.

Know your worth. Former airline pilot Felicity O'Rourke found purpose in garden design after illness led her to rethink her career. One of her biggest lessons was learning to value her own time and expertise, rather than underpricing her work.
