The Rust de Winter Report
Rust de Winter delivered last weekend, with excellent fishing on Saturday and some quality bass coming out of the dam. We decided to try something a little different and put the McArthy Tantrum Crawls to work. The fish certainly approved!

Top producing baits:
* McArthy 4.25" Junebug Tantrum Craw
* McArthy 3.75" Junebug Glow Tantrum Craw
* McArthy McRinger Junebug, fished on a shaky head
Both baits were fished on a mojo rig. The Junebug colours proved to be the standout choice, producing multiple bites and some solid fish throughout the day.”

A KZN South Coast Essential

Slow reeling a McArthy Slinky while it bounces off the rocks is arguably one of the most versatile techniques an angler can use on the KZN South Coast.

While the target species is often Kob, the reality is there are plenty of other species willing to take a swing at a slinky.

The formula is simple:
• Nice foamy, rolling white water
• A very slow retrieve
• 5.5-inch Pearl White McArthy Slinky
• Rigged with a Sensation Frog Hook

Simple, effective, and on even the toughest fishing days, it gives you a solid chance of getting a bite.

This beautiful catch is proof that when conditions line up, the slinky gets the job done.

Fishing the rough stuff with confidence

The McArthy Kob Slinky paddle tail in Orca colour doing exactly what it’s designed for. Rigged weedless, this setup lets you work tight into rocky areas where the fish live—without constantly getting snagged.

Natural action, solid hookups, and the freedom to fish structure properly make this lure a must when targeting kob in the bricks. Sometimes the difference is simply fishing where others can’t.

Fish smarter. Fish tighter.

SN**CH N GRAB AT BLUE LAGOON KZN

The McArthy range of soft plastics will always have a place in my tackle bag, and this quick pre-work session proved exactly why.

A decent little Kob decided to commit to the McArthy Jerk Minnow 3-inch after a slow retrieve, working the plastic close to the bottom with subtle hops.

Sometimes it only takes a quick session and the right presentation to get rewarded.

The fish was safely released after a few quick photos.

Tackle Used:

• Rod: Sensation Power Plus 7ft
• Reel: Okuma ITX 3000
• Braid: Boss Perma 10lb
• Lure: McArthy Jerk Minnow 3-inch

STOP THE SHORT BITES – SCALE DOWN FOR MORE SHAD HOOKUPS!

Shad often get a bad rap for being soft plastic destroyers — and honestly, it’s not without reason.

With their razor-sharp teeth and aggressive hunting style, they commonly attack prey from behind to disable it first, which often means bitten-off tails and missed hook-ups.

THE SIMPLE FIX?

Scale down your soft plastic size.

When the shad are around, switching to a smaller 3” or 4” paddletail can make a huge difference. Smaller plastics are easier for the fish to engulf completely, leading to:

✔ More hook-ups
✔ Fewer missed strikes
✔ Less frustration
✔ More fish on the rocks

Tackle used:
Paddletail: McArthy 3" Electric Mullet
Jighead: BKK Harpax Inshore 10g

Sometimes, a small adjustment makes a massive difference.

What’s your go-to lure size when the shad are biting short?

Craws take back to back Tournament Wins at Rust de Winter
“We recently fished back-to-back events as part of the Anglers 4 Anglers Series at Rust de Winter, which resulted in wins on both days. Here’s a breakdown of what worked. After pre-fishing, three key areas were identified, with the standout being the Salad Bowl. The most productive pattern was pitching a McCarthy 3.5" MCrawly and 3.75" Tantrum Craws into the deeper pockets along the grass lines.
The best colours were Black Green Gold and Green Pumpkin Blue. The baits were rigged on a 3/0 BKK Wide Gap Hook paired with a pegged 1/4oz Sensation Tungsten Texas Weight. The key was to pitch into the grass pockets and work the bait slowly through the openings and along the edges of the vegetation. We must note that our Okuma Ex**sy 7ft MH rod played a big role in detecting the subtle bites that often came as the bait moved through the cover.”

Full-Bodied vs Slim / Weedless Paddle Tails – Know the Difference 🎣

Choosing the right paddle tail can be the difference between a blank and a solid hook-up. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you match the lure to the conditions

Full-Bodied Paddle Tails
These are your go-to soft plastics when fishing open water and sandy areas.
Best paired with weighted jig heads
Larger body = bigger baitfish profile
Excellent for calm conditions, but still effective in moderate to strong currents
Ideal for covering water and attracting fish from a distance
Perfect when Kob are actively feeding and you want maximum presence and vibration.

Slim / Weedless Paddle Tails (Slinky Style)
The slinky is built for tougher terrain.
Slim, streamlined profile
Rigged with a wide gap hook for a weedless setup
Ideal for reef-riddled areas, structure, and heavy current
Cuts through water with less resistance while staying snag-free
This setup lets you fish where others can’t.

Why both work for Kob
Both styles shine day and night. The paddle tail action creates strong vibrations that Kob detect through their lateral line, helping them locate prey even in low visibility.

Different conditions. Different tools. Same result — fish on
