Sunday reflection…

Every door we open should feel safe. A door to our home. A door to an e-hailing car. A door into a room. A door to an opportunity. A door we open simply because we need to get from one place to another.

Sometimes opening a door can feel like making ourselves vulnerable to something we never asked for.
This week has been another painful reminder that abuse and intimidation can exist in places we least expect it. In rooms that look respectable, in spaces where we should feel safe.

We should not have to calculate the risk attached to every door we need to open.
We should be able to enter a room, get into a car, walk through a doorway or simply go about our lives without fearing what might happen on the other side.

In a week that felt very heavy and when it was difficult to continue as if it were business as usual it was the little things that kept us going.

The little things that reminded us that we have the right to exist.

Words of appreciation from someone. Someone choosing to be kind or even God’s beautiful creation that you notice along the road.

In a week where we have been confronted yet again with the devastating reality of gender-based violence and killings we needed something to keep us going.

We don’t have to agree on anything to be kind to one another.
A kind person is unlikely to harm you even if you don’t agree. They would choose humanity and choose to see another person as a human being worthy of dignity and care.
Perhaps that is why the little things have felt so significant this week.

A kind word.
A message.
A beautiful flower along the road.
These were all reminders that there is still goodness around us.
Little reminders that we are still here. Little reminders that we matter.

I’m a woman before I’m a businesswoman.
I’m a mother of a daughter before I’m a businesswoman.
Today hurts.

Today I’m not thinking about business. I’m thinking about a mother who went out for her usual run and never came home.

I’m thinking about her eight-year-old daughter who had to alert the family that her mother hadn’t returned.

I’m thinking about the family who yesterday had to identify her body.
I’m thinking about the other women who have lost their lives in more or less the same area over the past few months. I’m think of the other women whose stories we may never hear about.

This is not business as usual.

As women we should not have to accept this as the price of simply living our lives. You should be able to return home after your run.
Today this empty chair represents the woman who should be sitting in it.

Today hurts.

Today is not business as usual.

A Sunday reflection.

These lid boxes that we foiled in the week got me thinking about what it means to be an alumni.

You leave somewhere but you don’t necessarily leave behind what that place gave you. You carry the lessons, the people, the experiences and a reminder of where you come from.

It made me think about something Siya Kolisi often speaks about - “the coach always reminds us of where we come from.”

When you remember where you come from you remember that what you’re doing is bigger than yourself.

I think there’s a lesson in that for us as a business too.
How easily we can allow fear to become bigger than our purpose.

Fear of failing.
Fear of getting it wrong.
Fear of taking the next step.
But when we remember why we started we are reminded that the purpose is bigger than the fear.

Perhaps that’s what makes the Springboks so inspiring. They don’t just play for themselves. They carry something bigger.
As we enter the new week we will remember where we come from and why we started.
We shouldn’t let fear make us forget how big the purpose is.

The Springboks have become like a birthday that just keeps on giving presents! 💚💛

We couldn’t help but think of them while working on these dark green embossed birthday cards on textured board. The combination of the embossing, the colour and the texture is a winning combo just like our boys in green and gold. 🇿🇦

Tonight they go again and we’re expecting yet another birthday present. 😉

Double the machine power to create this finish. ✨

What looks like one detail on the finished piece is actually created in two separate processes.
First we foil the border which common element that appears across all the sheets.

Then comes the years-of-service block. Whether it’s 5 years, 10 years, 15 years or more, each milestone requires its own block and its own set-up.

So while the border remains consistent the years-of-service detail is changed and set up specifically for the milestone being recognised.

Two machines. Two foiling jobs. One finished piece.

Did you know we can tell a lot about the health of our machine just by listening to it?

That suctioning sound is more than just background noise.
When the suction is strong and consistent that’s a good indication that the system is working properly. If something is wrong with the suction the machine may struggle to lift the paper or pick up multiple sheets at once.

Every part of the machine matters.
For a seamless process and a consistent result, every component has to do its job properly and work together.
