Quote of the day

Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself?

~Dr M Lloyd-Jones ~

If I'm a Christian, why am I depressed?

Dear Customers,

Depression is becoming more common these days as the pressures of personal circumstances or this troubled world bear down upon us. For some depression may be a prolonged glum mood, but others it can be completing debilitating, preventing the sufferer from carrying out ordinary everyday tasks. Whether our depression is a shadow or a deep darkness, the Lord is with us. We cry out to him and pray for guidance in all circumstances โ€“ we know he is there. He is still there when our darkness hides him.

Depression is one of those things that we feel the need to hide, but perhaps the first step of on the ladder out of the hole is to tell someone that we are battling. We need to find someone safe that we can confide in. Someone to listen, to pray with and to have them pray for us. As with many things, a problem shared is a problem halved. And there is a freedom in letting the cat out of the bag.

The next step is to get help. When darkness prevails, we cannot see the way forward. We need a guiding hand. This could be a spouse, friend, a pastor, a counsellor. And, of course, we have books on the subject that may help. But help is not going to be at hand if we donโ€™t seek it. We trust that those who help give us practical help as well as lead back to the light of leaning on our God. The ordinary means of grace are the way back: prayer, reading scripture, attending church, fellowship. Of course, when we are depressed, none of these are easy. We need to push through, one small step after another. This is where we need the help โ€“ as we push, we need someone else to pull. Slowly the light will return.

This, of course, is a very simplified view of depression. It is often more complex than this and the way back may be way more complicated, even if the principles remain the same. Everyone is different and suffers differently. Some have never suffered depression and have no clue what all this is about. If you would like to know more, read the book by Robert Somerville called If Iโ€™m a Christian, why am I depressed? The author has revised the book adding another chapter. This new version has now been printed in S.A. and is available at R180 โ€“ this is R40 less than the original version! The book is being launched at an event at Antioch Bible Church on Saturday 8th August at 10 am.
