For goat farming (especially if you’re raising Boer goat for meat), the best feed depends on the goats’ age and purpose (kids, pregnant does, breeding bucks, or fattening goats). A balanced diet usually includes roughage + protein + minerals + clean water.
Best Feed for Goats 🐐

1. Natural grazing / pasture (Best & cheapest) 🌿
Goats love browsing:
Bush leaves
Shrubs
Weeds
Grass
Tree leaves (acacia, moringa, lucerne)
This is excellent because goats prefer browsing more than sheep or cattle.

2. Hay / Dry roughage 🌾
Good during winter or drought:
Lucerne (Alfalfa) — high protein, very good
Grass hay
Peanut hay
Maize stover
Alfalfa is one of the best for growth and milk production.

3. Concentrate feed (for faster growth) 🌽 Use in moderation:

How to Start Goat Farming with Zero Capital

1. Start with knowledge, not money

Learn basic goat management first: feeding, housing, breeding, and diseases. Use free sources—YouTube, farmer groups, extension officers, experienced farmers. Knowledge reduces costly mistakes.

2. Use borrowed or family land

You don’t need to own land. Start in a backyard, unused family land, church land, or agree with a landowner to keep goats and share profits or kids.
3. Begin with 1–2 goats (donation or agreement)
Ask relatives or friends to give you a doe. Some farmers give goats under a pass-on system where you return the first kid and keep the rest.

4. Practice free-range / tethering system

Let goats graze along roadsides, fallow land, or bushes. Supplement with kitchen leftovers, banana peels, sweet potato vines, and tree leaves.

5. Build housing from free materials

Use old timber, iron sheets, sacks, mud, or grass. The key is a raised, dry floor, good ventilation, and protection from rain.
