An interesting registered cover sent from BURGERSDORP/ AU 29 11 (looks like a relief cancel) via PORT ELIZABETH to KRAKEEL RIVER (Cape), with 2 different TPO transit cancels on reverse. Unfortunately not in perfect condition but such is life!

This is an interesting item. The stamp was issued on 5th September 1895 but here it is on cover dated 1 SEP 95 cancelled...

This is an interesting item. The stamp was issued on 5th September 1895 but here it is on cover dated 1 SEP 95 cancelled at WOLMARANSSTAD. The question is, was this done by favour with the datestamp being turned back? The cover is addressed (probably self-addressed) to Mr Thos (Thomas) Leask, an illustrious and well-known businessman and avid philatelist, who had stores in a number of places including Wolmaransstad.

Another fine post card dated 1908 that caught my eye for a few reasons, besides the three fine and clear railway images.
(1) The inscription at the base reads: Departure of Cape Mail from Capetown (sic) Station.
(2) Before the above inscription is a number '12' indicating it is a part of a series of cards.
(3) At first I though the card's corners had been damaged and then cut round, but it appears that the card has been printed and issued thus, which is unusual.
Despite some ageing and a ceased SW corner, it is still a very attractive item, don't you think?

Here's something rather unusual, issued by the Natal Museum in Pietermaritzburg. Because of their size, at first I assumed they were post cards, but they are blank on the reverse side. I also note they were printed by Waterlow & Sons Limited, London, who were well-known as quality printers of stamps and related material.
Unfortunately there is no indication of date of issue, nor what their purpose was, and I wonder whether the six I have is a complete set, or were their others issued?
Has anyone any information they can add to this?

When one says "modern" postal history, at what date would that term apply?
Here's a cover I was going to call "modern" but when I considered the 1960 date of posting was over 66 years ago, maybe the term doesn't apply.
The philatelic interest is the 'VHR' Cinderella label applied, which is inscribed VERWERP HIEDIE REPUBLIEK (reject this Republic), aimed at countering the referendum that was held on 5 October 1960.
The label has smaller inscriptions on the parameter reading: Uitgegee deur M R Malleson/ Progressiewe Party G B Sentrum, Jhb/ Gedruk deur Central Press, Melbourneweg, Dbn.
Interestingly enough, the referendum (voted on by white people only) was passed by a slim majority of just over 52%, indicating strong opposition to the proposal.
Of added interest is the slogan cancel (which also ties the label to the cover) reading FIGHT CANCER. Could this be a cryptic reference to the soon to be Republic?
Amazing what a seemingly small, relatively "modern" cover can present to the philatelic historian.

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on the item below. It appears to be a set of 6 photographic essays submitted for the South African 1925 Airmail issue, with an inscription in German on the reverse to that effect. Any information would be most welcome.
