The Scouts’ Scout
Major Frederick Russell Burnham D.S.O. was born May 11, 1861 on a Sioux Indian Reservation in Minnesota. He began his life as a scout aged 14 on the expedition to capture or kill the Apache chief, Geronimo.

In 1893 he sailed for South Africa to join Cecil John Rhodes’ pioneers in Matabeleland and Mashonaland. He was the lead scout on the Shangani Patrol led by Major Allan Wilson. Burnham and 2 others were the sole survivors of the patrol. The Shangai Patrol was the Rhodesian equivalent of the Alamo or Custer’s Last Stand.

Burnham subsequently left Southern Africa and went gold prospecting at Klondike in the Yukon. In January 1900 Field Marshall Roberts sent for Burnham to be his chief scout. During the Anglo-Boer War he was captured twice, escaping both times, and was almost fatally wounded and invalided out of the army with the permanent rank of Major and a DSO even though he was American.

Burnham was friends with Lord Baden-Powell and introduced him to the many aspects of scouting. Baden-Powell used the lessons taught to him by Burnham when he came to form the Boy Scout Movement.

The books pictured here are “Scouting on Two Continents” by Burnham & “The White Men Sang” by Alexander Fullerton.
Burnham’s book is the 1934 edition published by Ivan Deach, JR of Los Angeles.
This 1934 edition is especially interesting as it has been inscribed by Burnham in 1935. “The White Men Sang” is a fictionalized account of the Shangani Patrol and was published in London by Peter Davies in 1958. Obviously Burnham is a central character in the novel.

Burnham died in Santa Barbara, California on September 1, 1947. This very abbreviated biography only touches on the major highlights of a life lived to the absolute fullest.

Lionel Read The MiG Diaries book launch – 11h00 The Armoury

The MiG Diaries by Lt-Col. Eduardo González Sarria and Lionel Read with illustrations by Sean Thackwray

Co-author Lionel Read will launch this new book which contains fighter pilot memoirs and accounts of Cuban, SAAF and Angolan air combat in Southern African skies. Most books on the Angolan Bush War present the South African perspective of events. Now a former MiG-23 Squadron Commander of the Cuban Air Force has collaborated with and ex-SAAF pilot to paint a remarkable new picture of the aerial conflict over Angola in the 1980s. The sketches by Sean Thackwray, himself a former fighter pilot, helps to bring this unique story to life, along with select images, including many not seen in print in South Africa.

Prof Kathy Munro’s talk on Charles Sydney Goldmann and sale of Goldmann maps - 12h00 The Armoury

In 1895 Charles Sydney Goldmann, a financial journalist and gold buff, published a major three volume study on the Gold Mines of the Witwatersrand. It was all about investment trends and the many emerging entrepreneurial mining companies across the Witwatersrand. The one volume comprised 99 maps of the mines. Goldmann was the Mr Goldfinger of his day. He made his fortune in gold mining investments but ultimately settled in the UK and Canada. He was clever, courageous, articulate and ambitious. He was an early photographer and went on to become a war correspondent and photographer in the Anglo Boer War, an early “embedded” journalist with General French’s column. This talk is about Goldmann, the man, his career, his mining maps and his achievements. The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation will also have a selection of original Goldmann mining maps for sale, each encased in archival film and individually priced.

Selected books are currently on sale in the book shop.
A wide variety ranging from art, history, science, politics and travel, all 30% off.

A sight that never fails to jar, a British Bobby uniformed in traditional garb, talking to a German officer during World War 2.

It happened . The Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans during World War 2 and as a consequence the civil authorities on the Islands were required to co-operate with the occupying force.

The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles that occupied by the Germans. It was turned into an impregnable fortress of gun emplacements, bunkers and observation towers.

The irony of all this effort was that the British just bypassed the Islands when Invading Europe and re-occupied the Islands, peacefully , after the Germans surrendered in 1945.

It was a real pleasure to be visited by Peter Badcock and his wife Toni after the Military Fair on the 2 May. Peter had come to drop off copies of his new book A WAR ARTIST’S DIARY.
It is an omnibus edition of his previous 3 military art publications.
He graciously signed all the copies that are for sale in the shop. R495 per copy.
Copies of his previous books, FACES OF WAR and IMAGES IF WAR are relatively easy to come by.his new book also includes pictures from his first book, SHADOWS OF WAR, which is extremely scarce and difficult to come by.

It was a privilege to spend time with an artist who’s work I have known and admired for years.

Bookdealers of Rivonia and The Military Book Bunker to be seen at the Military Fair

Justin Gordon from Bookdealers of Rivonia and The Military Book Bunker is one of the commercial exhibitors that will appear at this year’s Pro Patria Military Fair.
Bookdealers of Rivonia is part of the well-known chain of second-hand bookshops that were established in Johannesburg almost 40 years ago. Justin has owned this particular branch since 2011, and he is still closely associated with the chain.

They sell all genres of books, but because of Justin’s interest in military history, he established a specialist annexe to the shop called The Military Book Bunker, which consists of approximately 2000 titles.
If you are a voracious reader of military books, you do not want to miss Justin’s stand at the Military Fair.
