Day 9/10 creative challenge

My love of small things .
A display full of twenty miniature (10x10cm )shelves filled with tiny paintings, books, flowers, clocks, plants, bottles and all the completely unnecessary little treasures I can squeeze into them.

Each one develops its own personality as I work on it. Some are elegant, some arty, some slightly eccentric… and one appears to have been taken over by the Easter Bunny. 🐰😂

The best part is hunting for the tiniest objects (mostly junk)and then creating a whole little world around them. Things that would normally be thrown away suddenly become furniture, décor or artwork when you look at them through miniature eyes.

It is ridiculously fiddly, completely impractical and takes far longer than anything this small has any right to take… which naturally means I love it. 😂❤️

Apparently, when I run out of space in my real house, I simply start decorating imaginary ones.

I do not enjoy still life and flower paintings.But i do loooooove abstract !

Apparently my flowers have decided that quietly sitting in a vase is far too boring. 😂

They’ve dressed themselves in their brightest colours, invited a few enormous blue leaves along for moral support, squeezed into one vase and started a parade. 💃🌸🌼

This one was all about colour, wonky lines, exaggerated shapes and absolutely no attempt at behaving sensibly.

🌸 Day 6/10 of Creativity — Book Folding 📚

Sometimes the paintbrush needs a day off… but the hands apparently still need to make something! 😂

A different creative escape is book folding — and it’s also a brilliant way to upcycle old books that have reached the end of their useful lives.

Old university law and tax reference books are perfect. They date quickly, become redundant and are often easy to find in second-hand shops. Best of all, many have 1,000+ pages, which gives you fantastic volume for more detailed folds — sentences, names, designs and even facial portraits.

There’s something wonderfully satisfying about taking a forgotten old reference book and turning all those intimidating pages into a piece of art. 🌸📖

No paint.
No canvas.
No washing brushes.

Just a ruler, a lot of folding… and the slightly questionable decision to voluntarily spend hours counting pages. 😂

Day 5/10 creative challenge

I wanted this drawing to be a glorious collision of colour, distortion, pattern and personality — where nothing is quite where conventional portraiture says it should be, but somehow everything belongs.

Big eyes, wonky geometry, spirals wandering wherever they please and enough colour to make beige file for early retirement. 😂

I deliberately allowed the face to remain imperfect and asymmetrical. Because really… perfect faces are terribly overrated.

Day 4/10 of challenge

Keeping up with the days on this challenge has been pretty hectic but fun.
So here is my latest drawing for the challenge.

Meet Vibrant Silence — a lady with magnificent blue-and-green swirly hair, enormous eyes, fabulous red lips and the calm expression of someone who has completely stopped listening to everybody’s nonsense.

Behind her, the city is having a full-blown colour crisis.
Buildings leaning.
Roofs shouting.
Windows glowing.
Colours everywhere.

And her?

Nothing.

She is silently judging the entire situation. 😂

I loved playing with exaggerated features, wonky architecture, bold outlines and completely unapologetic colour in this one. The more I paint and draw these quirky faces, the less interested I become in making things look perfect — and the more interested I become in giving them personality.

🌼 DAY 2/10 — 10 Designs in 10 Days

So here we go — Day 2 & I’m sharing one of my drawings

Meet The Artful Glance — my latest colourful lady, created from a glorious jumble of lines, patterns, spirals, dots and whatever else my pen decided to do when I wasn’t supervising it.

I wanted her to be bold, quirky and completely unapologetic. No perfectly behaved lines. No sensible hair. And absolutely no beige. 😂

She’s a little bit Picasso, a little bit folk-art fabulous, and a whole lot of my love for fragmented faces and pattern.

Well… apparently I’ve been challenged! 😂
Thank you Overthemoonsue for inviting me into the 10 Designs in 10 Days challenge.

So here we go — Day 1 & I’m starting with one of my new acrylic whimsical drawings .

The brief may have started with a humble wooden planter box, but somewhere between the paint, patterns, plants, butterflies and increasingly suspicious-looking eyeballs, things got wonderfully out of hand.

We ended up with everything from tropical brights and coastal turquoise to dramatic navy and fabulous faux woodgrain. Each student developed their own colour palette, textures and frog personalities — and those personalities are STRONG. 😂

There are frogs reclining like they pay the mortgage, frogs giving serious side-eye, frogs wearing eyelashes that deserve their own postcode, and at least one who looks as though she’d like to speak to management. 🐸👀

What I particularly love is that although everyone started with the same basic concept, no two finished pieces look alike. That’s exactly what a creative class should be about — learning the techniques, then throwing the rulebook sideways and making it your own.

Another fabulously quirky day at Westcoast Creative Studio. 🎨
