Some helpful tips and info for all the dogs owners in the area.
Walking your dog is such a great way for both of you to get exercise but in the interests of safety here are a few tips from Rogz that we suggest every dog owner follows:
ALWAYS
* Make sure your dog is trained to walk on a lead and comes when called.
* Make sure your dog is well socialised and won’t fight with other dogs. Signing up for training classes when your dog is a puppy will make all the difference to his/her behaviour as he/she gets older.
* Carry water for your dog (and you) to drink.
* Carry p**p bags so you can pick up after your dog.
* Make sure your dog’s collar fits correctly (you should only be able to get two fingers between the collar and their neck) or use a harness. Our Vetshops stock a wide range of collars and leads to fit dogs of all ages and sizes.
* Make sure your dog is protected against ticks and fleas if you are walking in the veld or parks. Our Vetshops can advise on the best protection for your pet.
* Carry treats as a reward if you plan to let your dog off lead.
NEVER
* Walk your dog in the heat of the day.
* Have your dog off lead unless you know it is a safe, dog friendly place. Dogs should always be on lead near roads.
* Force your dog to walk further than they are comfortable with. Old dogs and dogs not used to walking should be watched for signs of fatigue.
* Run or walk long distances with puppies. Too much exercise can damage their bones and joints.
* Feed your dog a large meal just before walking.
