BRITISH GOVERNMENT OPENS DIRECT IMPORT ROUTE FOR SOUTH AFRICAN HORSES
The South African equine industry has reached another significant milestone with the announcement by SA Equine Health & Protocols NPC (SAEHP) that the British Government has officially approved the direct import of live horses from South Africa into Great Britain. The decision marks a major breakthrough for breeders, owners, riders and exporters, further restoring South Africa's position within the international equine marketplace.
The approval follows a comprehensive assessment by UK authorities of South Africa's equine disease control systems. As a result, registered horses meeting UK import requirements will now be able to travel directly from the approved vector-protected quarantine station in Cape Town, eliminating the need for lengthy and costly indirect export routes.
For more than a decade, South African horses destined for Britain and Europe were required to undergo lengthy quarantine and transit through Mauritius because of African Horse Sickness (AHS) protocols. The process added months to export timelines, significantly increased costs and placed unnecessary stress on horses before they even reached their final destinations.
The latest announcement represents the culmination of years of collaboration between SAEHP, the South African Department of Agriculture and the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. Together, these organisations have worked tirelessly to maintain internationally recognised biosecurity standards while demonstrating the effectiveness of South Africa's disease surveillance and control measures.
The reopening of the British market follows other recent successes for the South African equine industry. Earlier this year, direct trade opportunities were expanded with Dubai, New Zealand and Australia, while direct exports to the European Union resumed after years of restrictions. Collectively, these achievements are restoring confidence in South African bloodstock and creating exciting opportunities for international trade.
For breeders and exporters, the benefits are substantial. Direct flights dramatically reduce transport times, improve horse welfare, lower export costs and make South African horses more attractive to overseas buyers. The country's internationally respected Thoroughbred, sport horse, endurance and breeding industries are now better positioned to compete on the global stage.
