An urgent letter to the Vaal University of Technology

ADC MOTORCYCLES

To: The Counsellor / Student Affairs Department

Vaal University of Technology (VUT)

FORMAL COMPLAINT: DANGEROUS CONDUCT TOWARDS DELIVERY RIDERS AND DAMAGE TO MOTORCYCLE

Dear Sir/Madam,

We at ADC Motorcycles wish to formally bring to your attention a very serious and dangerous incident that occurred today involving students at Vaal University of Technology and a delivery rider who was simply carrying out his normal daily duties.
We have been informed that students were throwing water at delivery riders while they were riding their motorcycles.
We cannot emphasise strongly enough how dangerous this behaviour is.
A delivery rider on a motorcycle is extremely vulnerable. Throwing water at a rider can cause the rider to become startled, lose visibility, lose control of the motorcycle, skid or collide with another vehicle, pedestrian or object. What may be regarded by some as a joke can, within seconds, result in serious injury or even the loss of a life.
These riders are not on campus for entertainment or confrontation. They are working men and women who are trying to earn an income and provide a service, including delivering orders to students and staff.
Unfortunately, this incident has also resulted in damage to a delivery rider's motorcycle, creating an additional financial burden for someone who relies on that motorcycle to earn his daily income.
For a delivery rider, a damaged motorcycle does not only mean repair costs. It can also mean being unable to work and therefore losing income for every day that the motorcycle is off the road.
ADC Motorcycles therefore respectfully but firmly requests that Vaal University of Technology investigate this incident as a matter of urgency, identify the students responsible where possible, and take the appropriate disciplinary steps.
Furthermore, due to the circumstances under which the motorcycle was damaged, we request that VUT assist the affected delivery rider with the cost of repairing his motorcycle.
We also request that the University communicate clearly with its students that throwing water, objects or any other substances at motorcycle riders, delivery personnel or passing motorists is unacceptable and extremely dangerous.
This matter extends far beyond damage to a motorcycle. Someone could have been seriously injured or killed.
We sincerely hope that VUT will treat this incident with the seriousness it deserves and work with us and the affected rider towards a fair resolution.
Video evidence of the incident is available and can be supplied to the University should it be required for its investigation.
We would appreciate a written response regarding the University's intended course of action and assistance with the motorcycle repair costs.
