Looking at the satellite image across the country:

Thunderstorms have already developed just south of Upington and west of Beaufort West, with heavy cloud cover in these areas.

More rainfall is expected, eventually becoming widespread over much of the eastern Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

For Thursday:

A definite chance of rain remains along the coastal areas of the Eastern Cape, especially around Gqeberha and surrounding regions.

Widespread showers and thundershowers are expected over the eastern parts of the Western Cape and across the Eastern Cape.

Scattered showers and thundershowers are likely in the remaining areas of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu‑Natal (except the far northeastern parts), the northeastern Free State, and central North West.

Elsewhere in the country, only a 30% chance of showers, except in Limpopo over the northern and eastern regions where it will remain dry.

In the afternoon:

It will range from cool to cold across much of the Cape provinces.

Warm conditions are expected over the eastern parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Cool weather will dominate the central regions.

Quite a lot is expected across the country this Wednesday:

A cold front passing through working together with a cut of low will bring very wet weather to parts of the eastern Western Cape and the Eastern Cape, with a few heavy downpours possible.

A definite chance of rain is expected along the coastal areas of the Eastern Cape, especially around Gqeberha and surrounding regions.

Widespread showers and thundershowers are likely over much of the eastern Western Cape and parts of the Eastern Cape, with scattered showers extending into the surrounding areas, including the southwestern Free State.

Isolated showers and thundershowers may occur in southern KwaZulu‑Natal, along the western coast of the Northern Cape, and in the western North West.

In the afternoon:

It will be very warm over the eastern parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu‑Natal, and the Northern Cape.

Cold conditions are expected over the high‑lying areas of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

Elsewhere across the central regions, it will be cool.

Starting with the accumulation map for the next three days:

Significant rainfall is expected, especially along the coastal areas of the Eastern Cape around Port Elizabeth, as well as across the southern parts of the country.

For Tuesday evening:

Scattered thunderstorms are expected over the southern coastal areas of the Western Cape.

Elsewhere in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, there is a 30% chance of showers and thundershowers, with a slim possibility of heavy downpours and brief hailstorms in some areas.

In the afternoon:

Conditions will be warm over the eastern regions,

Warm across the central parts,

And remaining warm in sections of the Northern Cape.

- It will be windy in the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and parts of the Western Cape, while conditions in the north and east of the country will remain relatively calm.

- In the morning, expect a cold start with single‑digit temperatures over the central regions.

Elsewhere, conditions will range from cool to warm, with slightly warmer weather over the eastern regions as usual.

Looking at the rainfall probability map:

A 30% chance of light showers is expected along the southern coast of the Western Cape, though the chances remain low.

Isolated showers and thundershowers are likely over the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and along the escarpment of Mpumalanga later in the evening.

Weather Update – Thursday, 28 May 2026

Starting with a wide look over southern Africa: a large storm system sits just east of South Africa but is moving away, with no impact expected. A cold front southwest of the country is set to make landfall from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, bringing only about a 30% chance of a few showers in the southwestern Western Cape.

A bit of drizzle is possible along the eastern coastline of the Eastern Cape. Otherwise, fine weather will prevail across the country, with some morning fog in parts of the Western Cape and along the escarpment in Limpopo, clearing quickly as the day progresses.

In the afternoon, it will be warm over the eastern parts of the country, cool across the central regions, and warm again in the Northern Cape.

It will remain mostly dry across much of the country, with partly cloudy skies.

Morning fog patches are expected over the Western Cape, parts of the southwestern Northern Cape, and areas in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, but these will clear quickly as the day progresses.

Later in the evening, showers are expected to develop over Cape Town and surrounding areas.

Drizzle is also possible over the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, with a low chance of a rumble of thunder.

In the afternoon, it will be warm over the eastern parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal. Conditions will be cool over the escarpment and central regions, but also warm in the Northern Cape and parts of North West.

It will be mostly dry across the country this Tuesday, with pleasant weather overall.

Morning fog patches are likely over the northeastern parts of Limpopo, areas of KwaZulu-Natal, and the western parts of the Western Cape, but these will clear as the day progresses.

In the morning, it will be cold as usual, with temperatures starting in single digits across the central regions. By the afternoon, it will be mostly warm along the eastern coastline and parts of the Northern Cape, while elsewhere conditions will remain cool.

There is only a slim chance of a few drops over the northern parts of Limpopo, parts of the Eastern Cape, and a very slight chance in the western areas of the Western Cape.
