Bacteria type used in our products: Bacillus consortium producing the following enzymes:

Protease- breaks down proteins (eg meat excreted/secreted proteins) into amino acids

Lipase- breaks down fats/grease into fatty acids and glycerol; if not broken down, fats can go rancid and lead to malodours and blocked drains/fat grease traps

Amylase- starch acts as a glue for dirt. Amylases catalyse the breakdown of starch into sugars which are then further used as a food source by the bacillus

Cellulase- breaks down cellulosic material

Urease- catalyses the hydrolysis of urea into breakdown products

Xylanase- helps in breaking down plant cell walls

Esterase- splits esters into an acid and an alcohol in a chemical reaction with water (hydrolysis)

Regular laundry detergents are bad for the environment — most of us know this by now. Detergents don’t completely biodegrade and they contaminate our water supplies, rivers and oceans with toxic heavy metals like cadmium and arsenic.

Studies have shown that common ingredients in detergents, builds up in waterways and lead to eutrophication — big algal blooms that can starve fish and other plant life of oxygen.
(For more information check out the US Environmental Protection Agency’s list of laundry detergent ingredient and their impacts.)

Water samples from 18 shorelines across the world show that the contamination is pretty widespread.
Thankfully, there are enough environmentally friendly soaps and detergents around to help minimize the impact of conventional ones.

What kind of nasties are lurking in your chopping board?

Here's a snippet of an article that highlights what kind of nasties could be found on (and in) your chopping board, and a helpful tip on how to keep them at bay...

(Excerpt taken from https://www.haegs.com.tr/2015/11/30/tips-for-a-germ-free-home/

"Bathroom aside, your kitchen is probably one of the dirtiest areas in your home, and with good reason! While many of us place great effort into disinfecting bathrooms, few dedicate the same attention to their kitchen. and here are a few key areas to look out for.

Chopping boards: Chopping boards, especially boards used for cutting raw meats, can be riddled with bacteria such as Salmonella and E. Coli. Studies have found that these essential items can harbour up to 200 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. While most of us wash our chopping boards after use, despite our best intentions, bacteria and germs can still survive in the small cracks on the board.

Haegs tip: If your chopping board is looking old, replace it! Remember to separate chopping boards for raw meats and fresh produce. Use chopping boards made of glass or plastic as they are non-porous, most resistant to germs and can be thoroughly cleaned in the dishwasher. If you have a wooden chopping board, clean it thoroughly with hot running water while scrubbing it with a dish soap and sponge. Knife marks and scratches require extra scrubbing. Don’t forget to clean both sides of the board as meat juices can drip and be absorbed on both sides of the board.

Bits of food left on a chopping board will soon breed bacteria, so scrubbing down your board immediately after use is vital to stop them spreading. Quick, easy and essential, cleaning chopping boards is one of the most basic kitchen hygiene rules."

Ignorance, as they say, is bliss – except when it involves “green” practices that are merely harming the environment in a different way, or having no effect at all. As the popularity of “eco-friendly” products continues to rise, manufactures and distributors are attempting to differentiate their products through the use of inaccurate statements, skewed facts and downright myths.

In this instance, knowledge truly is power – especially when it comes to reading between the marketing material lines to determine whether or not green cleaning products are truly green... Usually, companies that sell “green” cleaning products position these items within one of four categories; probiotic products, enzymatic products, bacterial products (biological), or essential microorganism products (microbes and their metabolites).

A carefully calculated combination of bacterial strains (considered beneficial microorganisms) and added enzymes, is the winning formula in green cleaning. When used correctly, these products are completely safe and effectively tackle
the wide variety of compounds found in the waste system.
