"I wanted the mall management to know that we are not all looters. We did not have food in the house. I wanted to make a difference. I want to help speed up the process so that things can go back to normal."
Sithabile Gumede has lived in Umlazi for the past 11 years. When their local mall, Philani Valley, was looted and left in a terrible state last week, Sithabile decided to be part of the solution.
On this Mandela Day, we celebrate individuals like Sithabile and the thousands of other everyday super-heroes who rose to the occasion and did what needed to be done.
After a week of destruction and chaos, it is the actions of citizens like Sithabile that, we believe, would have put a smile on the face of Madiba.
Happy Mandela Day! Now more than ever, every day should be Mandela Day.
