🌱 BEATING THE DROUGHT:
What to Plant This Winter, available at Froggy Pond Nursery 🌾
Let’s be honest—this current drought is tough on all of our gardens. But here on the South Coast, our beautifully mild winter gives us a unique advantage! Right now is actually the perfect time to get waterwise plants into the ground. Planting them now allows their root systems to settle in comfortably without dealing with the blistering heat of mid-summer.
If you want a gorgeous garden that doesn't rely on constant watering, here are three indigenous drought-warriors you should be planting today:
🔥 1. Winter-Blooming Aloes
Who says a waterwise garden has to be boring? Winter is prime time for aloes to shine. They thrive on neglect, require almost zero water once established, and push out magnificent fiery orange and red spikes that bring instant life (and sunbirds!) to a dry landscape.
🌼 2. Gazanias (Treasure Flowers)
The ultimate groundcover for baking hot spots. They form a thick, water-retaining carpet over the soil and open up into massive bursts of bright yellow, orange, and bronze whenever the sun hits them.
🌿 3. Spekboom (Portulacaria afra)
A true South African superstar. Not only is it practically indestructible in a drought, but it’s also an incredible carbon-sponge that helps clean our air. Use it as a structural shrub, a hedge, or let it tumble beautifully over a retaining wall.
💡 Quick Winter Planting Tip: When you plant, give them a good, deep soak to help settle the soil around the roots, and then mulch heavily with bark chips or dry leaves. Mulch acts like a blanket, keeping the soil cool and locking in every single drop of moisture!
