Dr. Lawrence Anthony had spent decades working with traumatized elephants at his Thula Thula game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa — most famously rescuing a herd of elephants that had been condemned to death for destructive behavior, taking them in against the advice of authorities, and spending months in the field with them until the herd's matriarch recognized that this human was different, and the family chose to accept their new life. Lawrence knew these elephants individually. He visited the herd regularly, spoke to them, understood their hierarchies and their histories. When he died of a heart attack in March 2012, his family was devastated. And then, twelve hours after his death, something happened that nobody could explain and everybody who witnessed it will carry to their own grave. Two separate herds of wild elephants — the family Lawrence had rescued and a second herd he had also worked with — appeared at the boundary of the reserve's main property and walked to the house where Lawrence had lived. They had not been to this location in over a year. They arrived without being called, without any human action that could have prompted their journey. They stood at the house and the gardens for two days — not agitated, not seeking anything, simply present, touching the walls and objects with their trunks in the slow, careful way that elephants touch the bones of their own dead. Lawrence's son, who was present throughout, wrote later that it was the most profound and inexplicable thing he had ever seen — and that he had no framework for it except the one that required him to accept that the elephants knew, and that they came because they knew, and that what they did when they arrived was grief. There is a growing body of scientific literature on elephant mourning behavior. There is an even larger body of human witness testimony that the science has not yet fully caught up to. Lawrence Anthony wrote a book called "The Elephant Whisperer" before he died. In it, he described his belief that elephants communicate on frequencies and through channels that human science has not yet identified. Two herds arrived at his home twelve hours after he died. He was right. 🕊 Share the story that proves love crosses every boundary.
