1 September 2026 marks a very special day for us — one whole year of Doorn Dierekliniek! 🥹❤️

When we started this journey, we had dreams, hopes and a whole lot of faith… but we could never have imagined just how incredibly special this first year would become.

To every single client who walked through our doors, trusted us, supported us, recommended us, sent us updates and allowed us to become part of your pets’ lives — THANK YOU. ❤️

And to every one of our beautiful patients — the wagging tails, wet noses, purrs, kisses, little paws, big personalities and even the ones who weren't particularly happy to see us 😂🐶🐱 — you are the reason we do what we do.

Thank you for entrusting us with your most precious family members. It is a privilege that we never take for granted. 🐾

This practice may have started with a dream, but YOU made it possible.

Looking back at this first year, through all the challenges, long days, happy endings, difficult moments, laughter, tears and countless memories, there is only one way to describe it…

When our patients send us updates 🥹🐾

One of our favourite parts of being your veterinary team is getting those little updates after surgery. ❤️

We always check in with our patients’ families to see how they’re doing because we genuinely care about every single one of them. And sometimes… our amazing owners get wonderfully creative with their updates! 😍📸

We absolutely LOVE seeing the pre- and post-surgery photos, the happy faces, the healing progress, and most importantly, the interaction and love between our patients and their families. 🥰

Thank you to Rex’s family for keeping us updated with such adorable photos of their beautiful Malinois! 🐕💚 We think Rex is doing a pretty fantastic job of being a patient!

🦉💚 A owl rescue close to our hearts!

One of our favourite little pet projects here at Doorn Dierekliniek is rehabilitating owls and, whenever possible, giving them a second chance to return to where they belong — back in the wild. 🌿🦉

This handsome Barn Owl (nonnetjies uil) recently found himself in a rather unfortunate situation after getting caught in a fly trap.

Luckily, he was brought to us by Virginia SPCA , Free State, South Africa and we were able to carefully remove the fly trap and make sure he was okay. 🥹

Because the weather was particularly bad, we decided not to rush his release. Instead, we kept him with us for a few days, giving him time to recover and waiting for a suitable weather window.

And today… he was finally released! 🥰🦉🌳

There is something incredibly special about watching a wild animal regain its freedom and disappear back into nature where it belongs.

To all the strong women out there — the boundary breakers, limitation destroyers, dream chasers and everyday superheroes. 💪✨

To the woman who is strong, but still compassionate.
Tough, but still empathetic.
Successful, but still makes time to care for her family, her friends… and herself. ❤️

To the woman who walks into a room and knows she belongs there.
Who picks herself up when life knocks her down.
Who celebrates other women instead of competing with them.
Who can run a business, manage a career, look after her family (even the furry kind 🐾), solve a crisis, carry the groceries AND still wonder what everyone wants for dinner. 😂

You don't have to choose between being strong and being soft.
You can be both.

You can be ambitious AND nurturing.
Independent AND loving.
Fearless AND vulnerable.

Because being a woman isn't about doing everything perfectly — it's about showing up, giving your best, lifting others up and never being afraid to take up space. 🌷

"Life is like a box of chocolates... you never know what you're going to get." 🍫🐶

Unless it's a box full of Labrador puppies... then you know you're about to get lots of wagging tails, wet noses, endless kisses, and a whole lot of mischief! ❤️

This week we had the sweetest "box of chocolates" visit us for their very first vaccinations, which makes this week's Breed of the Week an easy choice...

🥁 The Labrador Retriever! 🐶🎾

🐾 Traits

• Friendly, outgoing, and always ready for an adventure
• Athletic and strong
• Short coat... with LOTS of shedding 😅
• Originally bred to retrieve game and work alongside people
• Always carrying something in their mouths (whether you asked them to or not!)

Basically: the happiest dog you'll ever meet.

😌 Personality

Labradors are:

✔ Incredibly friendly
✔ Loyal and affectionate
✔ Intelligent and eager to please
✔ Fantastic family dogs
✔ Great with children and other pets
✔ Usually convinced that every stranger is just a friend they haven't met yet.

Labs love being part of the family. Whether it's a walk, a braai, a trip to the farm, or simply lying at your feet while you work—they just want to be where their people are.

🏥 Common Health Issues

Labradors are generally healthy dogs but can be prone to:

⚠️ Obesity (they LOVE food... and somehow always act like they've never been fed before! 😅)
⚠️ Hip and elbow dysplasia
⚠️ Ear infections
⚠️ Joint problems and arthritis as they get older
⚠️ Skin allergies

👉 Keeping your Labrador at a healthy weight is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Those extra kilograms place unnecessary strain on their joints and can shorten their happy, active years.

There's a reason Labradors are one of the world's most popular dog breeds.

They're loyal companions, wonderful family pets, incredible working dogs, therapy dogs, guide dogs, hunting partners, farm dogs... and professional snack hunters.

They simply have a way of making everyone smile.
