Dutch Boterkoek = Butter Heaven 🧈💛
What is it?
Boterkoek literally means “butter cake” in Dutch. But don’t let the name fool you.
It’s not quite a cake, not quite a cookie. It’s in a delicious world of its own. Think, dense, rich, buttery shortbread-meets-cake, that melts on your tongue.
What makes it special:
- Butter is the star - Real butter, lots of it. That’s non-negotiable. No margarine here.
- Texture - Dense and moist inside with a slightly crisp, golden top. It’s often scored with a fork pattern before baking.
- Flavour - Simple but deep. Buttery, slightly sweet, with a hint of vanilla or almond. Comforting and rich without being fussy.
- Shape - Traditionally baked in a round pan and cut into wedges, like a cake. Or sliced into small squares.
How you eat it:
In small pieces, because it’s _rich_. Perfect with a bakje troost ☕ It’s the kind of treat you nibble slowly while chatting. Pure _gezellig_.
Popular twist:
Gevulde Boterkoek - same buttery base, but with a layer of sweet almond paste in the middle. Next-level lekker 🌰
It’s basically a hug for your taste buds. Simple ingredients, maximum comfort.
_Het komt wel goed sc***je_ ♡
