At Mielie Mailer we are firm believers in planet over profit as well as supporting like-minded local businesses 💪

Because local businesses make more local purchases, less transportation is required. In turn, you’re contributing less to pollution, traffic congestion, habitat loss and resource depletion.

With the current state that the world is in, it is more important than ever to know that local is lekker! 💪🌍They need us! Make a personal investment in your neighbourhood. Support the local coffee house☕️ that you usually drive past on your way to a coffee chain. Try out the weird second-hand clothing store on the corner instead of going to H&M, the environment (and perhaps your fashion game) will thank you for it!

You have definitely heard buzzwords like artisanal and small-batch, lean into it! Often times the production of small-batch products involves the use of techniques, processes, and/or ingredients that might not be seen as “cost-efficient” in mass production. When you shop at local businesses, you’re likely getting something that’s unique and exclusive.

Shop Local. Eat Local. Spend Local.

By using paper as one of their raw materials, has proven how you can create something beautiful and sustainable🌍💪

The result is a unique product line, which can be likened to origami in its simplicity of design. The natural texture of the paper also lends the product a unique tactile quality that adds to its appeal. Perhaps the most iconic example of the Wren’s product offering is the company’s bestselling range of PPC-branded bags, which are striking for the way in which they combine contemporary design ideas with ordinary materials to produce something that is uniquely eye-catching. In addition to paper, fabrics utilising repurposed coffee sacks (the Jute Range) and antique linen (the Linen Range) are used.

Each fabric has a story of its own to tell, from the linen grain sacks that were woven between 1880 and 1910 to the well-travelled coffee sacks infused with their cargo of aromatic beans. The Wren Design offers more than 40 products to choose from and there is a bag to cater for all tastes. All Wren products are hand crafted to ensure durability and the highest quality of workmanship.

We are huge advocates for slow fashion, local production and obviously environmental preservation. Wren takes all three of these concepts to the next level!

Well done Wren!

Local is lekker!

Local businesses often employ members of the community, which translates to shorter commutes, less highway congestion and less petrol consumption. So while shopping locally reduces your carbon footprint🌱, it's also helping members of your community reduce their own potentially negative impact on the environment. 🌍

On top of this, we have some of the most innovative people in the world right on our doorstep! By supporting local, you are encouraging innovation. You are helping someone live out their dreams and let their creativity sore! 💪

Buy a local product and you will be a part of saving the planet🌍, encouraging innovation💡, supporting job creation, community identity creation and promoting individuality. How could you not?

We love not only for their incredible designs but also for their innovative use of materials! 🌱

We are huge suckers for innovation that is done beautifully with the environment in mind, and Wren has hit the nail on the head! Proving that you don’t have to sacrifice the health of our planet to produce stunning products.

The first Wren bags were made from English woven fabrics, then the visionary, Wendren Setzer, discovered discarded coffee bags ☕️ at her local roasters which led her to rethink her whole manufacturing process.

The idea of using found materials and repurposing them with the aim of promoting sustainability was a turning point for the Wren Design.

While exploring other materials options, she hit upon the concept of using paper to construct items of apparel.

This marked a radical departure from conventional textiles, but it is an innovation that has proved highly successful. By treating the paper using fusion and coating technologies, the paper’s strength is greatly enhanced and it becomes a functional fabric.

We are so proud to be a part of Wren’s sustainability journey and are so impressed by how innovation, ingenuity and paper has lead to a product that is great for us and our planet!

It can be overwhelming; seeing how our planet is suffering. I understand that it can feel hopeless at times, that is seems that nothing you can do will make that much of a difference.

I spent last weekend picking up nurdles* on Muizenberg beach and a man came up to me and said what I was doing was pointless, it would take years to pick them all up.

I felt this sense of hopelessness but then I remembered a story, by Peter Straube, that I had been told as a child.

You may have heard this one:

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to walk on the beach every morning. ☀️

Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed ⛈ and found the beach littered with starfish.

Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching.  As the boy walked, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea.  The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning!  May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”

The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”
The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean.

Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

I want to tell you that what you do, however small or large, it makes a difference!

*Nurdles are tiny beads of virgin plastic that are melted down and injection moulded to make a variety of new plastic products. They easily make their way into the food chain when fish and other filter-feeding marine creatures mistake them for eggs and miniature jellyfish 🐙

“We need YOUR help to clean up the nurdles and quantify how bad this pollution event is! Please go down to your local beach and collect as many nurdles as you can!” — a call to action from

Hey Guys 👋

We are so excited to showcase yet another of our favourite brands, 🥳

The Wren Design was founded in 2008 after the owner, Wendren Setzer, took the decision to resign from her job as a textile designer at a clothing factory. 🧵

She found that working for a large corporation was unfulfilling and wanted to take on a new challenge.

Finding herself in need of a handbag 👜 she decided to put her own design skills to use and made her own. This became her first product and so she launched into her new career as an entrepreneur.

By starting a business that was more in keeping with her own design ideas, she had the freedom to apply a more innovative approach to product development. 💡

Her belief in the value of good workmanship over mass-produced products served as the central principle around which the business has evolved. She has kept a practical, hands-on approach to the business ever since.

Soon we will be posting more about these beautiful products and how they are made, I bet you can’t guess the material used!😉

We love local businesses that support slow fashion and our planet 🌍💪

Our number one sentiment is that we can use nature to save nature!

This is why we have partnered with Tree-Nation! 🌳

With each delivery sent out using a Mielie Mailer, we offset double the carbon emissions of that delivery 🚚

We do this using the most effective way currently available: by planting trees in deforested regions across the world through

Tree-Nation is a company with one sole mission:

to combat desertification, deforestation and climate change by planting trees.

Ultimately, they want to reforest the world 🌍🌳🌳

Why trees? They are considered to be the best way to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Tree-Nation gathers and coordinates reforestation efforts worldwide. Currently, they coordinate 160 planting projects in 33 different countries.

We aim to bring back Nature to the hearts and lives of citizens, companies, and institutions, to ensure that our respect for it becomes a universal and unbreakable law. - Tree Nation

Tree-Nation makes sure that the trees which they plant are local in nature, suitable to the climate of the project region and provide benefits to the local communities surrounding their restoration areas. They plant more than 300 different tree species ranging from baobabs to cacao trees. 🌲🌳🌴

Besides the obvious benefits of reforestation,
* carbon sinks
* water source
* biodiversity restoration
the projects which Tree-Nation undertakes and which Mielie Mailer is a part of enhance the local economy by generating jobs and by promoting sustainable agricultural practices. 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾

Let’s put aside the welfare of society and the planet for a minute and analyze the decision to go green purely through the lens of profit 🌱

Does choosing to conduct business in sustainable ways increase profits? It’s not an outlook we’re particularly fond of as we believe this paradigm of business is as outdated as it is dangerous. Regardless, the answer is yes.🌍💪

Consumers are becoming more conscious of the impact of their purchasing decisions, and they want to know what the brands they like are doing to offset the impact of their operations 🙏

These concerns are only set to grow more mainstream, as Millennials and Generation Z mature to make up the majority of the consumer market. These generations are characterized by their commitment to brands who have a positive social or environmental impact 😎🌍

60% of 18-24-year-old shoppers, hope to exclusively shop with retailers offering sustainable delivery options, while 55% of survey respondents would pay extra for goods from companies that are committed to environmental responsibility. 💚

Sustainable shipping not only increases brand loyalty and sales but also improves efficiency. How and why we package goods the way we do is rarely questioned, and this has created some major inefficiencies.

We always promote planet 🌍 over profit 💚 and now it is time, as consumer, to demand the same!

Mielie Mailer was founded to provide makers, brands and businesses with sustainable solutions to everyday essential packaging products. Every decision we make and action we take is driven by our ultimate mission:
to use nature to help save the world— and create a better future now.

We are so excited to have created products which have minimal impact on the planet, but we don't want to stop there. Minimal impact is great, no impact is better. So as we continue our journey we want to share with you some of our policies that we are so proud of!

1. Natural 🌽
We use spoilt corn in the production of our Mielie Mailers and recycled wood pulp in the production of Paper Pop products. The use of corn and all natural materials in our products mean they use less energy, emit less carbon dioxide and require fewer chemicals to produce 🌱. The unique composition of our products mean they put minimal strain on the environment at the end of their useful lives 🌍

2. Human 🧑‍🏭
Our products are good for the planet and that means they're good for people too. Climate change and biodiversity loss is set to disproportionately effect the poor and vulnerable. Our fight for nature is equally a fight for human-beings. In line with this view, our production facility has been audited for fair-working conditions. 👭

3. Wild 🌍
We believe in the power of trees to transform and regenerate broken ecosystems 🌳. When planted responsibly with the backing of local communities, their benefits far exceed carbon capture. In addition they provide homes for surrounding wildlife, halt topsoil erosion and provide essential resources for the local populace. As part of our carbon-negative delivery offering, we only fund tree-planting projects which adopt this holistic approach 🌿

ZERO WASTE, ZERO WASTE, ZERO WASTE!

We will keep shouting this until the cows come home (to be loved, not eaten)! 🐮

On that note, we want to applaud Kuro-Bo once again for their zero-waste initiatives!

Kuro-Bo charcoal sticks are:

🌱Completely natural and eco-friendly
🌽Offered in a compostable corn-starch or wood cellulose bag and optional recycled card packaging
🧊Reusable for 3+ months – if your water still tastes great, just keep reactivating each month!
♻️After 3+ months, the charcoal is recyclable in many earth-kind ways

Zero Waste is changing the course of eco-history, gaining momentum right around the world, raising awareness about the impact our living and consumption choices are making on the earth.🌍💪

Zero Waste is all about choosing to follow a sustainable and single-use plastic-free lifestyle when purchasing, creating, consuming and disposing of products: always choosing sustainable products that don’t negatively affect the environment and end up in landfill.

This is why we love partnering with Kuro-Bo and providing them with our home-compostable packaging! 😎
