MORE UNDOCUMENTED MIGRANTS ARRESTED DURING OPERATION SHANELA IN ZEERUST

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West, working together with the Department of Home Affairs, arrested 13 undocumented migrants during an unannounced Operation Shanela conducted in Zeerust on Friday, 10 July 2026.

The multidisciplinary operation comprised members of the North West Anti-Gang Unit, the Illicit Mining Team and officials from the Department of Home Affairs. The arrested individuals, aged between 22 and 48, are nationals of Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They were detained and are expected to be processed in terms of the relevant immigration legislation. During the operation, police also recovered one sewing machine and one butcher's knife, that formed part of lost and found property.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General Naidoo, commended the members for their continued commitment to ensuring safer communities.

He said Operation Shanela remains a key crime-fighting initiative aimed at disrupting criminality and ensuring compliance with the laws of the Republic and confirmed that police will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to address illegal activities, including immigration-related offences.
Lastly he commend all members and officials who participated in this successful operation and said these unannounced operations will continue throughout the province.
