🥹 WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT PATIENT CARE DURING MY HOSPITAL ATTACHMENT 🥹👌
Sometimes what a patient needs most in a hospital is not just a test, a prescription, or even a diagnosis…
It is to be treated like a human being who matters.
During my time at Ndola Teaching Hospital while I was based in the laboratory, I had the chance to observe something very powerful. Even though my work was mostly behind the scenes in diagnostics, I could still see how patients responded when they were handled with empathy, patience, and simple human kindness.
And I practiced it too whenever I had a chance to interact with patients.
I realized something important: a patient does not always come to the hospital in their best state of communication. Some are in pain. Some are anxious. Some are confused. Some cannot even clearly explain what they are feeling. And that is where we, as health professionals and students, must rise above the routine.
what i noticed is that when i took time to LISTEN PROPERLY, to SPEAK CALMLY, and to REASSURE PATIENTS even in small moments their entire attitude changed. They became CALMER. More COOPERATIVE. More TRUSTING.
Sometimes, all they needed was not a long medical explanation.
Sometimes, what they needed was a SMILE, A CALM VOICE, OR EVEN A SMALL LIGHT-HEARTED JOKE just to ease their fear for a moment. And surprisingly, that simple human connection made them more open, more relaxed, and even more confident in the care they were receiving.
I learned that empathy is not just sympathy. It is active presence. It is patience. It is choosing to slow down in a system that is often fast.
SOME OF THE QUALITIES I BELIEVE EVERY HEALTH WORKER SHOULD CARRY INCLUDE:
✓PATIENCE... because patients are not always able to explain themselves clearly
✓ACTIVE LISTENING... hearing not just words, but fear, confusion, and pain
✓RESPECT... every patient deserves dignity regardless of condition or background
✓CALM COMMUNICATION... the way we speak can either heal anxiety or increase it
✓EMPATHY... putting yourself in the patient’s situation, even for a moment
✓REASSURANCE... letting the patient know they are not alone in what they are facing
✓HUMAN CONNECTION... sometimes beyond medicine, people just need to feel understood
I also noticed something very important: the hospital experience is not only about treatment outcomes. It is also about how the patient feels during the journey.🥹
A patient may still go to the pharmacy, may still return for review, may still undergo further investigations but if they feel guided, respected, and understood, their entire experience changes.🎉
And I saw this clearly: a worried patient arriving anxious… and leaving with a sense of relief, not necessarily because everything was instantly solved, but because they felt heard and cared for.
That matters more than we often realize.
To anyone in healthcare or training: NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF SMALL HUMAN GESTURES. A calm explanation. A gentle tone. A reassuring smile. Even a light joke at the right moment to ease tension.
Because sometimes, what the patient really needs is not just medicine…
It is to feel safe in your presence.
